Anyone know anything about this department? I've read alot about the county department, but how about the city?

I'm sure Adrian is not too far behind me, but...
Good, small department (two firehouses, 1 Engine, 1 Rescue Engine, 1 Truck, 2 Medic Units, 1 Batt Chief). 24 hour staffed by paid personnel. Active volunteer base with a good working relationship (at least it was when I did a summer there... gosh... 10 years ago) with the paid staff.
Very good people. Very good EMS protocols. Full mutual aid with the county. Dispatched by the county.

The best way to learn about any department is to knock on the door and visit the stations. Make sure you come bearing gifts (ice cream, pie or coffee). Explain to the firefighters that you would like to become a firefighter and they can steer you in the right direction.
THe more homework you do BEFORE you get there the more receptive they will be. DO NOT waste their time asking how many engines, trucks and how many calls they go on. Look this information up before you go. They will see you as a more serious candidate, rather than just a lookie loo.

Can't argue with logic like that.
