Hello everyone. I got a letter the other day saying I had passed everything and was put on their eligibilty list. I've heard of most or some depts that say where you are on the list. Such as, you are number 5 out of 10, or something like that. This city did not do this, just said that I am on the list. DO you think it is okay to call and ask if they could tell me where I am on the list? The reason I would like to know is because it is about 11 hrs away and it would be a big move for me so I would like to know if I should be preparing more. Any ideas? Capt bob, maybe you have some advice on whether or not I should?
Thanks everyone.

Go ahead and call. The worst that could happen is that they don't devulge that info over the phone and/or they will give you that information at a later date.

I must say, I've never heard of anywhere NOT letting you know where you ranked. I could be possible what they were saying is that you passed everything, you are being placed on the list, which has yet to be entirely compiled. As soon as they get everyone's final numbers, then they let you know where you ranked. This may be the case if you tested for a large department or one that has a board that does not move very quickly.

However, as I said, I can't see how it could hurt if you contacted the proper people to ask that question.

Many agencies will put you in a band or just let you know that you're on the list. Then they give the chief the rule of the list allowing them to hire who they want.

Understand HR is deluged with requests like yours. I believe you should stay off the phone for awhile until the dust settles. It's not right, but that's how it goes some times.

No matter what do not consider moving until you have a signed job offer in you hot little hands.

I am thinking that you are right capt bob. They did say that if a position opened that I would have to go back down there for a chief's interview. So i'm thinking that they just have a list of people in no particular order and then if a position opens the chief will interview all of them and pick. I probably will not make the call then. I would never start the move there unless I for sure had the job, just trying to prepare mentally, ya know? Plus I have been thinking of buying a house where I am at right now and wouldn't do that if I were high on the list. I guess I will have to wait and see, I can't say that I am too optimistic though. Thanks for all the suggestions.
