Hey guys I'm assigned to the Army's only Technical Rescue Unit. After Being here for a while I decided on what I want to do with my life after the Army. I decided that I want to be a firefighter. I'm already looking at some of the volunteer units in my area (I've already have 9 years in with the Army and about 2 years left). My question is with my Army rescue tech and a possible volunteer firefighter background what would my chances be to be picked up by a department?

Unfortunately, departments don't rely heavily on past experience and training to choose candidates. Don't get me wrong, they can be very beneficial throughout the process, but the biggest hurdle is getting ranked high enough on the written test to continue in the process... this is where your military points (if allowed) will be a big help... just don't rely solely on those... you still have to prepare.

IMHO, having experience and certifications won't hurt you. Since you have nine years of military service, claiming Veteran's Preference will help out a lot in the application process.

Hmm, the Army's only Tech Rescue Unit. Sounds like your at Fort Belvoir, right? As you more than likely know, there is a lot of career and volunteer opportunities in the area, especially Fairfax and Prince William counties.

I know a few guys in that area and met some others online and thru email and they ALL say that the hiring is doing very well in that area....its growing nicely and firefighter jobs are popping up all over. Just take a peek for yourself :D
