hey everybody. i am a certified firefighter II/paramedic in the great state of ohio. i recently turned 21 and have spent the last 5 months working as a paramedic with a local ems company. i volunteer for my hometown fire department, but im ready for a job as a career firefighter/medic. i have spent countless hours since age 18 looking for tests, yet they seem so hard to come by here. does anyone out there know of any test in the near future, or any places hiring? i will and can relocate out of state, but if possible i'd love to stay in ohio. any responses are greatly appreciated.

i know a bunch of ohio medics who have come out to the metro washington DC area to do the fire thing. Look at Fairfax County, VA; Arlington County, VA; Alexandria City, VA; Fairfax City, VA; Loundon County, VA; Prince William County, VA; Montgomery County, MD; Prince George County, MD; Washington, DC Fire Rescue.
most of not all area hiring and have no residency requirement.

It sounds like you have done a lot of good things and worked really hard to get where you are. The reality is that fire departments are not standing in line to hire young employees. While you sound like the exception, the average 21-year old is not prepared to live side-by-side with older married guys who have kids older than you.
The good news for you is that you are going to do nothing but get older. While you are actively testing I would encourage you to enroll at the local college and earn your AS degree. This will set you above the rest.
Also, you need to learn to take a FIRE DEPARTMENT interview. Most will agree there are things we are specifically looking for from candidates and there are things that will hurt you.
Lastly, I would encourage you to pick an area of the country you want to work, raise your family and spend the rest of your life. The shot gun approach is ususlly not very effective. Even if it is you will find that you ended up in a place that doesn't meet your needs.
You have done a lot of hard work. It will pay off. Settle down and be selective. Maximize each test and don't waste your time applying at XYZ fire department if you really don't want to be there as you are wasting your time.
I sit on oral boards on a regular basis. It's pretty easy to see people who are motivated and eager for the position versus those who are just going through the motions.
Good luck and work smarter, not harder.
