Hey everybody. I've got an old emergency light that a buddy gave me and I would like to set it up so that I can run it off of household AC current. Is there a device available commercially that will do this? I have been searching the web, but I only find stuff to convert 12 volt DC to AC power, which is the opposite of what I want. Or does anyone know how to build something like this? I'm sure I'm not the only one who has ever wanted to run an emergency light in his house somewhere. :) Thanks!!

You might be ahead to just purchase a light for that. They are not that expensive. Is it a DC light with battery back up? You might spend just as much converting it as a new one costs.

Go to your local Radio Shack or similar store, spend 20$ and get yourself a 120AC to 12v DC converter. They have all types of them, and some of them you can get for around 10$

And once you get it rigged and running check to see if any wires are getting warm or hot. If so, unplug everything, pick up the phone and dial 9-1 and standby. If not, that's good.

Okay. On a somewhat serious side, could you describe this alleged light?
Is it AC or DC or does it go both ways? ( Couldn't resist that.)
Is it motorized? Does it have any electrical ratings printed on it anywhere?
Watts? HP? Hertz?
Gotta have something to work with here.
