WASHINGTON -- Potholes are one rite of spring that motorists try to avoid, but the real problem occurs when they can't get around them.
Where Have You Seen Potholes?
News4 is patrolling for potholes. The station found one of the navigational street hazards at Albermarle and 44th streets in northwest Washington. And the station also found a sizable pothole on Tilden Street in Northwest near 29th Street that had started collecting hubcaps.
A viewer e-mailed News4 about a pothole on Rhode Island Avenue Northeast between North Capitol and 12th streets, but the problem was fixed before a News4 crew could arrive.
Michelle Pourchiau of the D.C. Department of Transportation explained why. "We say we take 48 hours to respond," Pourchiau said. "But now we're getting so good, sometimes we get there the same day."
And the District has increased its resources. It's using new methods to make repairs to the pesky roadway craters, but city officials said they still need the public's help.
They're asking motorists to call (202) 727-1000 when a pothole is spotted so a repair crew can be dispatched to fix it. And when you call, Pourchiau said, "You need to pay attention to what street, what cross street and if you can see the address that will be good, but at least report the street and what the cross streets are."
Some motorists News4 talked with said they never report potholes. One lady said, "They should be able to see them and they should be doing regular maintenance. They should know."
