I was surfing the local Canadian military web and found the Dept National Counter Intelligence Unit website. In it I found the following:

Duty and Non-Duty Travel
DND/CF members proceeding to foreign destinations either on Duty or Non-Duty travel always face a certain element of risk. The threat continuum involved in foreign travel can range from minor annoyances, such as petty crime, through increasingly serious dangers such as Byzantine currency, citizenship and social regulations, national military service, all the way to even greater threats such as terrorism or espionage. With regards to espionage, DND/CF personnel travelling outside Canada offer Foreign Intelligence Services a significant positional advantage by allowing a hostile agency to operate from the safety of friendly base, at no risk to themselves.

My question involves the statement "... serious dangers such as Byzantine currency..." I did a web search and all I got were references towards the Byzantine period (2000 plus years ago) coinage in use at the time. In no way does it make a reference that makes sense to the above. Any thoughts or ideas out there as to what this could mean, in the context given?

Don't leave Canada, eh, the money is different out there.. :D
Have you ever tried to pay for the EuroRail with Loonies? They tend to look at you funny.

Byzantine usually refers to out dated or illogical regulations. They are just saying that you might come across problems with exchanging money in a fair way and troubles with passport and other travel regulations. There is a comma or semi-collin missing somewhere.

Thanks Dennis, that helps - I just love when they give archaic references that even I DON'T know. As for the quote, I copy/pasted it direct from the website, so if there is a grammar problem, it's the Web Master who is responsible. :)
