BEIJING (AFP) - A team of Russian pilots will reportedly fly fighter jets through a narrow cave in central China in a tourist stunt that will cost people up to 840 dollars to watch.

The Russian air force jets, including advanced Sukhoi Su-30s and Su-27s, will fly through the famed Tianmen Cave in central Hunan province on March 17-18, the Hunan Daily said.

The cave, which resembles a rock archway, is only 57 meters (188 feet) wide at its widest point and 28 meters wide at its narrowest, it said.

The cave is about 280 meters long and 130 meters high, and according to the China Daily, "is the highest water-eroded cave in the world".

Local officials are hoping to reap huge profits from the March event with 20,000 tickets on sale for up to 6,800 yuan (840 dollars) each, the China Daily said.

Publicity and ticket fees from a similar event in 1999 helped generate 2.5 billion yuan (308 million dollars) in tourism revenues over the next three years, the press reports said.

Organizers have already paid 52 million yuan to put on the upcoming event, including 2.7 million yuan for insurance, the Hunan Daily said.

The event is part of the "Year in Russia" celebrations in China.

Oh no... I have been around for more than five minutes and therefore i know how well Russian pilots and air shows go together. Much like a Zippo and a very very short fused stick of dynamite.

No doubt. But I think the posters (at least me) are reffering to the current sad state of affairs in what used to be the Soviet Union, as it pertains to the armed forces. ;)

Actually I think that space pen project was close to 12 million bucks, I always laughed about that.

I always remember that line from the movie Armageddon where the Russian Cosmonaut said "Russian space ship, American space ship, all made in Taiwan!"

Go to the Smithsmonian Air and Space in DC, it looks like the Russians had a yard sale. Old rockets, planes, etc.

Ft. Knox has an armor display, with plenty of German and Russian equipment to go around.

Wright Patterson AFB has planes and equipment from the Russians spanning back to WWII that I know of and heard roumor of some stuff from WWI.

The Cold War broke what they had/have, their military consists of a shift of guys waiting to push a flashing red button nowadays, the sold everything else. At least thats what it looks like.

State of the Russian Fleet: Due to continued political, economic and societal chaos in Russia, the Fleet is in a badly deteriorated state. Even those ships that remain in commission and theoretically operational are generally unable to deploy, due to lack of trained crews and lack of funds to buy fuel and stores. In general maintenance is minimal or nonexistent, and there are no funds to conduct much-needed overhauls, even for major fleet units. Many ships have been abandoned when repairs or refits came due.

The Su-30 is 14.7 meters wide!!!!

For perspective, the Su-30 is about 2 meters wider and 2 meters longer than an F-15!!!! That's a big freakin' bird!
