Hello all,
I'm a radar tech. for MIT here in MA. Work is putting me thru EMT-B and tower rescue training. I'm half way complete in the EMT training. I never considered this field before, but now I have a big respect for the field and am wondering why the EMT-B is so underpaid?
I guess most aren't in to it for the money!
Anyway, nice site and great forums.

There are many reasons. The biggest is that there are not many career EMT-B services. Not saying that there are not any but there are many municipal services. Also if you are going to pay a salary and benefits why not pay for the highest trained in the profession?

Many paramedics in private companies are not paid very well either. If you are looking for the best pay and benefits you need to go to a municipal department most of the time.

Our dispatchers are paid more to start than the paramedics are when they start!

yup, same goes for the private company I just left. medics make $12/hour with $1 call bonuses with NO raises. Do the math that's not even 25k a year. I just got picked up at a 911 contract company and the pay is better but still no where near the municipalities

Whoa , slow down there Woods. First off, you got hammered for a spelling error. That is not the end all of the universe. Posting giberish in response to that is a bad way to react. In this business you are going to be dealt an entire feast of crap, whether it be light hearted or otherwise. My advice to you would be to grow another layer or two of skin (whatever you have to do to make it thicker)

In your defense, you did spell it correctly in the body of your post. Unfortunately for you, your typo was in the subject, which you cannot edit, plus it is right out there in front, so it will be the first thing everyone will see.

As far as our pay goes, yeah it seems a little low, but where I work it seems to pan out, because every time I pull a shift(mostly overnights) we dont do a stinkin' thing. So as far as that goes, sometimes it seems I am way overpaid.

One more bit of advice, always smile, it makes folks wonder what you're up to !!
