Miller Co VFD has also had the same with few fire burning close to 100 acres. The county VFD has also had rash of House fire too... Burn ban is in effect until further notice...

Stay safe...

Do they know what that will do to the Volunteer Fire Service in Arkansas?
Right now, I have four people I am trying to give modules one and two too. Between their schedules and mine, we are having to do one on one's so they can get certified. Its all most of my department members can do to keep our 6 hours a quarter of required departmental training. I know from a safety standpoint where it would be nice to take the 10 classes but I feel a lot of people will quit volunteering If it happens. Also, who will teach those classes? Does the Academy have enough instructors for the 300+ volunteer departments?

To all that are wondering. The changes that are being talked about are not set. They are trying to get them so we do not lose any ff's. I would rather put someone in a house that has training through mod 7 than someone that has not even taken mod 3. The ff's would have 5 years to do the classes. If the ff's can not get these in that amount of time they might need try to find something else to do. I am a instructor for in house classes and i have most of my guys up to mod 6. Some of them have done the classes with me or other instructors and have gotten them done in 6 months. If you really want the classes you will find a way. It was not just paid departments there were volunteer departments there also. It was people that care about the ff's they have on the departments. This department is all volunteer along with some of the others i have talked to and we all think it is a good idea. Missed you at the meeting on the 4th

The AFA is still going strong. I have asked for 6 classes and we have had all of them approved. If you ask for a class you should get it. The belief that the afa does not have enough instructors is not true. Fill out the class request form and you should have a class coming. We had 20-22 classes last year. We should have that many or more this year. The more training your department gets the better off you and your community will be. The next ASFFA central district meeting will be in Malvern at the Hot Sping county fairgrounds april 5th 7:00 hope to see you there.

What is wrong with being a member of asffa? We are glad to have Pine Bluff i wish all firefighters in the state would become members. Could you see how strong we could be as one voice. The state would hear us loud and clear then. Right now when we talk to the politicians they hear us but they see us also. They see us as a bunch that cant get on the same page. Lets get in one unified group and see what we can do. We are all part of the firefighter family volunteers are just as proud as paid. Volunteers risk our life just like paid firefighters. Volunteers just dont get the pay or benifits paid firefighters do. Volunteers are on call 24 7, paid are on duty 24 and then get to go home for a couple of shifts. We are the same we all put our turnouts on the same way. Lets work together.

cozmosis
06-04-2007, 03:53 AM
What is wrong with being a member of asffa?

Absolutely nothing. I've been a member in the past. I'd be a member now but my department doesn't participate. I'm not sure why... I find it especially odd since our chief is a member of the state chief's association (which is sort of a sister to the ASFFA).

Volunteers are on call 24 7, paid are on duty 24 and then get to go home for a couple of shifts.

Career and volunteer are both important and both have their place -- especially in a rural state like Arkansas. But please don't suggest that volunteer firefighters are always on duty.

I've been a volunteer myself. There were times when I was out of town... Or maybe had a beer with friends... Or I was sick... Or there was some reason that I couldn't respond if the pager had gone off. The same must be true for you. You can't always be available and to suggest that you are isn't fair.

Also, don't paint vollie/career with such a broad brush. In many smaller departments, the off-duty career firefighters are recalled for working fires right alongside the volunteers.

Hello 7160 - We have a combination and a solid bore handline on every engine. We use 1.75" hose, so it gives us a choice depending on the fire. Sometimes we are limited on manpower and we can use the solid bore in place of a 2.5" handline and flow about as much water without wearing the crew out. Some people love them, some hate them, same all over I suppose. Do you guys still have a that 1000' brass pole at station 1? What was it Light, Dark, Light, Light, let go! lol

Allison - There are a lot of good vol departments in BC. MH is the only career department in the county. Gassville has an 8 hour a day chief and Bull Shoals has 2 - 8 hour guys. If you need more info just yell.

Coz, how are the new engines doing? We are about to hit 2000 runs for the year here in MH.

Well, the 2006 Smeal let us down this spring. It threw a rod or some such thing while enroute to a baby locked in a car. Fortunately, the cops took care of the rescue while our engine sat on the side of the road. It spent a month or so in the shop and seems to be as good as new.

We're ordering a new pumper in 2008 for the new second station that is supposed to open in 2009. I don't think it will be a Smeal or be on a Spartan chassis. With the new Pro-Fire service center opening up in Conway, I know where I'd put my money on what we'll be seeing in the bay.

cozmosis, Good to see you guys got some FIRE ACT money. What are you going to get?

I *know* I responded to this post... But something seems up with the forums -- your name appearing as a non-user among the most noticeable issues.

We're spending the cash on replacing some bunker gear as well as purchasing an extractor -- something we've never had before.

Is the 2nd station going to be on the north side of the city? How many guys are they going to let you all get? We have had a few problems with our new E-one, but never has just quit on us. It would be nice to get rigs local so if you had problems it wouldn't be that far to go. We ordered ours through a company in damascus but they went out of business the next year.

All is well in Bryant, we took on our new Bronto earlier this year and it is awesome. Had a few kinks to fix when we first got it( first month), but now it is very reliable. I guess it helps since two of the E1/Sunbelt techs work for us. The city is looking to annex to the north and hopefully sometime in latter part of the year...2008, we will open a 4th station.

The new station will be in the north, near the railroad overpass on Maumelle Blvd. The current station will remain as #2 until land and funding can be secured for a new station further south. Hopefully that won't take too long as I would think the land the current station sits on is valuable enough to help fund construction.

We currently have 17 career members with one more budgeted for next year. That will give us 18 -- enough for six per shift so we can prepare to run two companies each shift. We're also supposed to add new captains and engineers positions to prepare for two companies. Of course, our SAFER Act application asked for three... but we're not having the same luck with SAFER as we are with the FIRE Act.

If you wanna buy another E-One, I know where you can buy one cheap. :D
