As a matter of fact, this technician was trying to free a device that became tangled in the lowering mechanisim. I'd say he's got Balls, not that he's an amateur.
BTW, he had tried to do this in full PPE but was unable to reach the device.

I've seen that video in training tons of times. It is at least 20 years old. 229 is correct, that is exactly what the HDT was doing. Also, this video is much longer. The actual video shows them removing this HD from a public area, loading it into the pot and then the accident occurs. My recollection is that this incident occurred in Boston. Hardly an area with inexperienced and foolhardy HDT's.

And how is this different than anything we have ever done in the course of an incident to actually get the job done?
Taken off a piece of PPE to gain entry or to make access easier. Not worn eye protection. Things that you do that you were fortunate to not be injured doing so.
You do what you have to do sometimes. The Boston Police Bomb Squad is not amateur hour.

Oh yes, how are we to learn without using other people's examples of mistakes or approaches to a situation that did not work.
Kind of like the guys in Arizona using a K-12 on a fuel tank when it blows.
Kind of like the guys not noticing a BLEVE about to happen and kills 13 people.
