Hello all. I wish to arrange a 1 year exchange with a serving FDNY firefighter.
I am based in Newcastle, UK. Anyone know where I can get FDNY email addresses etc etc.?

Geordiekidd,
I am LFB ADO and have some very strong links with FDNY at all levels of the organisation. I can confirm that FDNY do not have any type of exchange programme. And in any event, knowing UK and US Firefighting you would have to be completely retrained. The way fires are fought in the US is completely different to how we do things in the UK, Europe, Australia, Asia etc....
Although the final result is the same, the principlas of tactics and attack are completely different. I have almost 19 years on the job over here and have researched/visited studied and wrote about US Firefighting for almost a decade...yet I would still feel the need to undertake a basic Training course before commencing a Firefighting role in the USA. In actual fact, depending on your time in over here in the UK, you may be disadvantaged compared to someone with no experience at all.
Having said that, certain Brigades in the UK (Leicestershire comes to mind) do encourage exchange programmes as part of a formallly recognised corporate exchange programme. I know of a Leics' Ff and an Australian Ff who swapped a few years ago.
There may be some smaller US FD's who have or are prepared to get involved in a programme or you may be able to volunteer for a Volunteer Fire Dept as I know a few UK Firefighters have. But getting an exchange with the FDNY is as difficult as it would be to do the same with LFB, the beats is just too big, too political and involved in too many other things to even begin to consider it.

Thankyou both for the replies. I knew that there wasn't an official exchange, but I was pretty much told that if I found a suitable candidate for exchange then my brigade would sort out the 'official' side. My brigade already run exchange programmes with Toronto and Queensland fire and rescue.
Is Toronto not likely to be a closer similarity to FDNY than Tyne and Wear?

Sir I
I know Montgomery County MD is not FDNY but there are Fire Depts like the Kensington VFD that would be happy to have you.
The KVFD has a "Live In" program for College Students.
Please see there web page at

and or contact captgplovett@firehousemail.com
thank you and have a great day

I'm curious to how things are different here in the US. vs the UK. Some examples would be great.
Thanks.
Jeff.
