I've read in numerous threads that ride alongs are recommended. I noticed that food and questions are important to bring. Donuts good choice?!?!?!? But the more important question I have is about the questions. I have a list going but I was curious if there is anything specifically I should ask that I may not think of?

Ask what THEY expect of YOU.

Then establish your limitations. Things you dont know how to do, but would like to learn. Things you cant do, because of policy(insurance or otherwise), And things you cant do because you arnt trained.

Where are you riding and why? Is it a dept. that you are looking to get hired on or is it for jollies?
Food: Pie and ice cream always works! Bring your own lunch or dinner even though they will likley include you in their meal. If not, you have a back-up.

Questions: This depends on why you are riding. At a minimum ask what is expected of you for the day and who your responsible party is. ie: officer, battalion chief, senior firefighter. In most cases you are there to observe only, so stay out of the way. In general you will be treated very well and should feel welcomed.

Questions 2: If this is a place you are seeking employment then ask - Work schedule, Relief times, Overtime, Union issues with the city, Who's the union president, What to expect the first year, How does the promotion process work, When is the anticipated start date, How many openings, Why are there openings (retire positions, death, military leave, new positions, maternity)? If it is a tempary position what happens after the appointment? Maternity returns or military guy comes home - then what? Lay-off?

Questions 3: If you are riding for jollies then don't be a stem wacker. Don't wear "I'm a firefighter T-shirt". Don't have your personal vehicle littered with volunteer paraphernalia (emergency lights, I'm a hero stickers, 18 antennas), and most important - DON'T TELL THEM HOW YOU DO IT IN YOUR TOWN!!!

I'm actually applying to the local fire academy (Fort Wayne IN). I have my testing next month, so I'm obviously gathering as much information as I can. If I pass all my test then I just have to leave it up to luck after that.

I appriciate your help guys.

I guess that all depends. When I do ride alongs I know the people that will be working (as I am an explorer) and I know what is expected of me. Also, I get off the truck and get tools for the FF's, which you most likely will not do since you are someone that is not associated with this department .

This is a tough thing to answer. Humility will get you a long way as far as presentation. Try to ask a lot of questions even if you know the answer. Let's say you see a piece of equipment that you are very familiar with and know how to use it. Ask them how it works, because fireman love to know that someone isn't a know it all. Donuts aren't so good for the heart, but the men will apppreciate the gester.
