Hoselayer,
I am certainly not an expert on VB, but they are 1.5 hours away and I will tell you what I know.
The department is regarded as an excellent, aggressive department around here. They pay well, have decent equipment, good leaders and excellent training. They are one of the largest departments in the state and are known for their tech rescue personnel which form the backbone for VATF-2 USAR team.
In addition, they are pretty busy. As far as I know they still do not do transport EMS, that is left to the volunteer rescue squad system which does a great job.
Best of all, from spring to late fall, you will get to work at the beach. The scenery on the boardwalk there is excellent!
Good luck.
