Training - New Jersey

I've heard lots of talk about New Jersey having a requirement that firefighters must undergo 24 hours of structural firefighting training annually to remain active. I have searched NJAC, OSHA, PEOSHA and NFPA for this standard and I cannot locate it.

Does anyone know where I can find it?

My understanding is that time spent at certain fire calls counts towards the 24-hour requirement. Does anyone know what the criteria is to establish which calls qualify?

I'm 98% certain this is crap. In fact, in NJ the FF-1 certification is still not required by law, just strongly encouraged.

Actually, ISO is the one looking for the 24 hours of training.

How can fire departments get slammed so hard in fines during LODDs for not having FF1 certified members if it is not required? Doesn't the law state you can't do any interior firefighting unless you are over 18 and certified FF1? What about SCBA use without taking a SCBA course? I am not trying to argue anything, just trying to understand and look for some answers to these questions. This is new information to me...

This was explained to me by someone that is from within the NJ system of FF training. I went into 5:73 to review it and my interpretation would be that it is a requirment based on reading the definitions and the subsection on FF-1. I'll check into it and see if i can get a verbal interpretation.

FFI is not required for vols, but it is required as a prerequisite for everything and anything else. FFII is on the way this spring along with IFSAC Pro Board Testing and NJ Fire Officer I training pilots.

To the best of my knowlege FFII is optional. The upcoming course is an additional 80 hrs of training and Pro Board testing is optional and will not be offered at all Fire Academies

I found the answer - NFPA 1500's 1997 edition did have a training requirement for 24 hours of structural firefighting training. However, this provision was not maintained when the 2002 edition came out.

Shoreman22, not sure if this is what you are talking about, but every year I know all the companies in Monmouth County, so I am sure its the entire state, have to take annual classes with Blood borne pathogens, haz mat, right to know, and the face fit. I know this is not structual type of fire fighting training, but could this be possibly what you are hearing??

That's something different - those are the mandatory drills each firefighter must take every year to be eligible to respond. The standard I had heard about would have included some of these drills, but ultimately all drill time (and presumably time spent at actual structural fires) would have to total 24 hours each year.
