Because with 7 million transit passengers all needing an alternate method of getting to work the amount of cars on the road increases dramatically. Can you say TRAFFIC GRIDLOCK?? Apparently the sidewalks were EVEN WORSE

AHHH.....
I didnt think most people owned cars in NYC - but I can see how all those people on the sidewalks/street could be a problem. Bike sales are probably brisk right now :D

I was in philly for the septa strike and can say I saw all sorts of traffic gridlock and PD out trying to control it. So its logical to asume with that and foot traffic there may be a minor to moderate increase in responce time during rush hour. But I'm sure officers are being sure to prevent it from becomming a major problem.

They don't -- it's the people from Long Island (and surrounding boroughs) that need to get to their city jobs...

I missed this post.
The story:
Firefighter Critically Hurt After He's Hit By Bus
Save It Email It Print It
(AP) NEW YORK Off-duty firefighter Matt Long was critically injured Thursday morning after being struck by a private bus. Long was riding a bike from his home in the 40's to his job on Randall's Island, where he teaches at the fire academy.
Long was hit at 5:58 a.m. on 52nd Street and Third Avenue in midtown Manhattan.
The 12 year FDNY veteran was transferred to New York Weill-Cornell Medical Center where he is in critical condition. He suffered multiple fractutres and internal injuries. Long already underwent one surgery and another is scheduled for later. Doctors are optimistic he will survive.
The bus involved in the accident is owned by Allen AME Transportation and is affiliated with the Greater Allen AME
Cathedral in Jamaica, Queens, which is run by the Rev. Floyd Flake, an influential clergyman and former Democratic congressman.
"I really can't discuss it,' said a woman who answered the phone at the company. "I don't know anything."
No charges were filed; the accident remained under investigation.
Matt Long is the son of State Conservative Party Leader, Michael Long. Both of his brothers are also firefighters.

Everyone is out to string up the mayor but yet they are forgetting the people on strike were breaking the law and obviously had no regards for the rest of the people in the city.

You obviously are unfamilar with all the provisions of the Taylor Law (other than the ones the Gov, Mayor and Crooks at the MTA want you to focus on). The law is there to give the city and state the upper hand and F' the workers.
I suggest you look at the larger picture and see what these aristocratic pompus A-Holes did to instigate a strike.
You want an example? Not bargaining in good faith (required under Taylor Law). And by that I mean having a BILLION dollar surplus and passing a budget mere days before the dead line with no discussion. Lying to the public and union about finances. Attempting to force Pension changes in contract dispute despite being prohibited by the Taylor Law, Chairman goes public with demand for arbitration while talks are on going THEN shows up 1 hour before the deadline to negoitate?!?! HOW in the hell is that going to encourage a resoultion? Initally offered a 3% and Conditional 2% if they reduced sick leave, along with many givebacks! That is insulting when they have a Billion Dollar surplus and only would save approx $20 million over the life of the contract.
Mayor Bloomsh*t, Used offensive launguage, filed frivoulous lawsuits to charge any striking worker with $25,000 a DAY (These people ), attempting to initiate class warfare pitting those who make less or who have less benefits against people who make around $45,000 a year in NYC....and You are going to side with a Billionaire Mayor??? Many of the policies were obviously made to make the commute much more difficult and infuriate the populace more at the strike (Taxi fare zones, HOV 4+, should have been 3)
Gov Pataki doesn't seem to want to hold his buddies at the MTA accountable to the Taylor law the same as he does 33,000 working class folks as they too broke the law.
Why would those in power risk the supposed $400 million a day over $20 million over 3 years  Because these aristocrats want to sock it to the other municipal workers in the next round thats why. They have a subversive agenda against the working man.
Funny someone like you who would most likely would bitch and moan about fare hikes from the MTA who have been found to lie, keep two sets of books, and not spend their cash appropriately (15 VPs with no title) would think that they should force working men and women who many work under conditions you would hardly recognize as safe or appropriate in the 21st Century into accepting an inferior retirement plan. Do you think we should have 62 year old track workers? how about 55 year old firemen (not officers or chiefs..men who do the labor on the fire ground) becoming more common (because that is what is what the mayor is wanting to to).
The only way to get ahead in this country is to stand up for yourself and demand respect and a respectable wage which at least keeps you up with inflation. (The MTA offer did nothing of the sort, with givebacks they would have lost ground on the cost of living).
I suppose you only give a f*ck if it affects you. IGM IGM IGM...me, me, me. Well we aren't built like that over here. I would say most of the men support these men and women who have better orginization and bigger balls than our supposed labor leaders. A little inconvience is nothing to having your family and their welfare held hostage by the upper class rulers who run the media, city and state. I was inconvienced...I was glad and proud of them. Their labor is worth more than chump change! I even brought a group of them in my neghborhood Hamburgers and soda on the Picket line.
Many of these workers live in complete sh*thole ghettos as they only make approx 40-50,000 year. You can't believe what that money can't afford in this town.
Educate yourself and keep your selfish, defeatest attidute to your self...if you think they have it sooooo great..perhaps you should take the motorman test yourself.

Did I state that I was in total disagreement about the strike NO so don’t put words in my mouth and try and educate me when I have enough knowledge to know what i am talking about.
I just think there are two sides of a story and both should be looked at before stringing someone up.
Is it right that this union obviously has no regard to the other people in the city that have to live there and work there?
Do you think they gave a damn just as much as the politicians about emergency personnel being delayed due to traffic from there strike?
There are other ways to settle it, Slow downs do work. You do not cripple one of the largest economies in our country. That’s just plain selfish in my opinion and I do have a right to it just as you do, so keep your hostilities toward me to yourself.

FFred is on the money....this city is run by rich elitest's who can understand what its like to make 50,000 a year in this city. They actually think its good pay. If you have a small family you literally can not live without 2 or 3 additional jobs. I am not exagerating. They constantly play games at contract time...we went 3 1/2 years with no contract, because the Taylor Law (enacted by the same politicians) only says the city has to bargin in "good faith" which to them can be offening no increase and give backs, and saying "we made them an offer...we're bargining in good faith"...it DOES happen that way, and we cant do anything.
