Hey, I'm scheduled to take CPAT on the 21st of Jan. Is there a hire date comming up or a rookie class available soon?

I know they had a CPAT recently in Novemeber so I didn't know if they're forming a list or having a second round of try outs.

I've read that they're pretty short of medics and they have a good rep as a service.

fairfax right now is hiring many people, it is my understanding they are running back to back recruit schools of approx 30 until the end of 2008. i also understand that it is taking medics somewhere in the area of 5-8 months to get hired, as opposed to EMT's which i am told is taking 12-24 months.

That's promising -- I'm a medic and I'd really like to start a career in major fire service.

I'm supposed take the written and the CPAT on the sme day I believe, and then a poly on a seperate date. It's quite a trip for me (I'm on the west side of TN), but I think it'd be worth it.

www.craigslist.org

Affordable? You're moving to the wrong area if you want affordable.

Fairfax county has a deal with a nearby apartment complex to give fire recruits a discount. You should check that out.

A couple of resources that could help:

http://www.apartmentguide.com/

Apartment guide is on-line and publishes a hefty book that you can find in most of the local grocery stores. You can order a copy from the website for $5 - ask for the northern Virginia book.

http://www.rentnet.com/apartments/home.jhtml?lnksrc=ts5

The cheaper rentals run about $695/month and, like most of the affordable housing in the DC area, is heavy with newly arrived immigrants.

Wow... Eric was right, affordable is not likely on a rookie salary.

Call recruitment and ask about the housing assistance plan that the FRD have set up with the County. I know a couple guys from Ohio that took advantage of it. Crapgame? Are you still here?

It's nice and 7 minutes to the academy.

Finally, welcome... I'll see you soon!

Hey, I'm a medic from NY and just got the call from Fairfax last week to come down for my poly, psychological, and medical. I was told that they are planning a April academy. Dose any one know what my chances are assuming all go's well with my tests.

Your chances are excellent. Since you are coming from out of state, and you are a medic (NR-I or P, I would assume), I figure they are setting those items up around a single trip.

Good luck! I will see you around soon!

Well, the chances are good because you are getting the calls, but it is just a fact that things will most likely not move as quickly as if you were an ALS provider.

Keep it up. It's definately worth it.

Well I jsut got a call from Fairfax before the holidays so that poly, psych, med, and CPAT are all on concurrent days. Looks like I'll be down there from the 18th to the 21st. As soon as I get off the plane on the 18ths I've gota taxi it down the the station ASAP for the fingerprinting and such.

How high is the cost of living down there? Proportionally, rookie pay there is a fortune compared to anything at all around here.

I've got the last 2 stages of the hiring process (psych eval. and uniform measurements) coming up next week. What are the chances of getting through the entire process and then not getting in a recruit class?

And the cost of living here in No. Va is pretty high. Definitely look into the low-cost recuit housing if that is an option.

Anything is possible. I hate to be so vague, but it's a fact. Are you ALS? Like I said before, that makes a HUGE difference.

Can't argue with that. I live in a three bedroom townhouse just outside the beltway on the south side and without my wifes salary, we sure wouldn't be able to afford living in County.

I'm not ALS, but I already work for another agency within Ffx County gov't. I understand the best chance for me would be if I already had medical certs, but I'm hoping my time in at my current job helps a little bit.
