Especially for a '54 with a blown engine and shot brakes. I mean, I get the nostalgic value and everything, but I dunno.....

It's kind of like that '79 Jeep CJ-5 that one guy was trying to sell because he was moving to Florida and had to get rid of it. It was a rust bucket and needed serious engine work, but he wanted $3,500 for it, and you had to take the plow that went with it too. Now, old Jeeps like that have nostalgic value just like your truck, but with the amount of money that I was going to have to invest in it to fix it up (one of the main reasons I wanted to get it), and the fact that he just wanted to get rid of it, that price seemed a little steep, and he wouldn't be talked down either. I was going to call him after a month or two and tell him that if he didn't have any takers and was about to move, I would take it off his hands for 500, but I never got around to it. It would have been a great thing to have, but not for that kind of money....

Good luck selling the truck though. :D

From the looks of that listing, and the bottom line: Agency: Parks & Wildlife Department , it would appear as if this is a US Gov't excess material/DRMO auction site. Many times prices are set by persons having absolutely no knowledge whatsoever of what it is they are setting a price on. That 17K figure was probably set by some kid in college majoring in Governmental Affairs or Poly Science, on loan to the Govt for an internship, and he found that number by googleing "used fire trucks."
