Hey folks. First and foremost I just wanted to thank you all for the incredible help you've been giving me the last couple of days. It really does make a difference, and I'm glad to have found this site.

LA county lifeguard tryouts are coming up in March and I was wondering if anybody here has had that job for any period of time. I know it will be extremely physical and many will not make it through to the interview process, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway. I'm a great swimmer (don't know if I'm county material?) but I figure this would be a great job to have en route to the FD!

What kind of training did you do to prepare yourself for the physical AND mental aspects of the hiring process? I may not be in the best shape to compete for this job, but I am willing to train and get in that shape to do whatever I need to do, wether it be this year or next.

How was the job? Was it rewarding?

Thanks again everybody.

(hope this is in the right forum???)

(hope this is in the right forum???)I was a lifeguard in Hawaii for a little while. Number one thing is get in shape, then get in better shape. The job is 2% mental, 98% physical, and 99% waiting for something to happen. It is a great job, one of the best in the world, i would say on par or better then fire fighting, but the pay is not there until you have been doing it for 20+years. So start EARLY in your life. ;) Really just run, and swim all that you can before try outs, and try to do flag drill(essentially your shuttle runs from elementry school PE). Run Run Run, Swim Swim Swim, they will teach you the rest, but they can't make you strong enough to start the training, you have to do that part yourself.
