I have a tentative start date in about a week, my medical is done, background is done. But I still have not heard anything from the chief saying im all set. Would I be a pain in the ass if I called him for an update? I dont want to annoy him at all.I wanted to give my current employer 2 weeks but it looks like that isnt going to happen. Is this normal for depts to do this, waiting to the last minute???

If it's a small department yes this is normal. I would call to find out where you stand, and let him know you need to give your current employer some kind of notice.

Its moderately small I guess, 6 stations about 180 people. Maybe that's the problem. Its just driving me nuts wondering what the hell is going on.

Often start dates get moved around. Instead of calling the cheif first call HR.

This is one of my pet peeves. We do a thorough background check on a potential employee to make sure he or she is ethical qnd makes sound decisions. Once we determine he or she has lived their life with code and honor we offer them a job and tell them they start in a week.
If one of my employees left with ONLY a one week notice, I would make a note of it on a background check. This is not leaving on good terms to an employer.
Now, the fire department only gives you a one notice that you are going to start? It's hypocritical.
I'm not picking on you, rather the syatem. If you start in a week, by all means jump on it. I am disappointed in the fire department for forcing you into this position.
What if you fail probation? Will your employer take you back? Maybe, but giving only a 1 week notice will definitely affect their decision.
It's just plain unprofessional!

Thanks!
It was a big gamble for my family, I moved 2000 miles and put myself through the academy and emt school while I worked full time, with a pregnant wife too!. My wife and I quit our good paying jobs in Boston, filled up a Penske truck and took a chance. Hard work truly pays off, at least thats what Ive gained from this whole experience. We have a new house, new baby, and now I just got this job. Not that anyone cares lol, but I just thought id share this in case anyone is getting discouraged, I know I was.... Capt. Bobs book was very helpful, I did follow his advice. Keep trying!!! The grunt work will eventually pay off in the end! Now I just have to make probation...........
