Sorry If I wasnt clear.I worked as a ( P.O.C.) for the dept for 5 years. so I am pretty tight with everyone there....the cheifs seem to like me. they offered me a job ( full time ) at the same time I was in the process of moving out of state for another job, so I took a pass... but they are not to worried about hiring me, seeing as how the next guy on the list is black..they are trying to get more Minoritys on the job, so we ( me and the other guys there) think thats why they are giving me the run around.....hopefully that clears it up for you.

Let me see me see if this is clear: YOU were offered a job but you turned it down and wanted to have it in case the job you really wanted didn't work out. And it obviously didn't. And now because the person next in line is black it must be because they want minorities. I would always take a closer look at someone who turned down an employment opportunity and then wanted to come back for some reason.

I didnt ask for your opinion I asked for Help.......My Cheif ( black ) told me if I didnt at least take the opportunity and go see if I liked it, that I would regret it.......so I did....and I dont regret taking the job.....its just not worth it too me.....Why would this dept Hire someone with NO expeience..who is not processed......When they could hire someone with 5 years experience with that dept, and a whole crap load of expeience else where...and who is already processed, and has gear.they save time and money.......seems like reverse discrimination if you ask me....So anyone got any help.......Not comments.!

It's not a matter of what color your skin is, the chance of you getting an opportunity to get hired as FT FF are slim now, why? because the person that's going to offer you that position is going to want to know why you turned it down and now want to come back, AND how long are you gonna be there before you bail again. Whereas the next person in line...REGARDLESS of race, more than likely is going to take it, and stay on the job. I don't blame them for giving you the runaround..you shot yourself in the foot when you didn't take it the first time. As competitve as the fire service jobs are, if you don't take that opportunity, there are 45,000 others that are ready, and just as experienced if not more experienced to step up and take it from you. So.....instead of pointing your fingers, and playing the race card, suck it up and realize you made your bed....now sleep in it.

Of course, keep trying...but I can guarantee you, you will NOT get anywhere.

Listin up all u buffs! dont give me that bull......as I stated before I am on here looking for help ....not suggestions and stupid ass opinions!I'm not a buff, well perhaps a bit, but not a full blown farkle. ....Help.is where I can find info on the state laws of Il.....stating that there is a 2 writtin pass rule....thats ithave you tried google? How about you just call the civil service board? who are you to tell me that this guy on the list is going to stay?...how do you know if he can take it...?Who am I to tell you? I'm someone who understands how hiring prcocesses work, I understand that there are 100's of thousands of FF's looking for full time jobs, I know that If you don't take that opportunity when presented, it's gone for good. you dont know anything, and I could care less of your opinionsI know plenty, and i'm not offering an opinion, I'm telling you how it is.

You've managed to do two things here..make an ass of yourself, and if anyone from that department can identify you, secured solid position in the no hire column. Oh..and it's nice to see that race doesn't play any part in your feelings in to who is hiring you..A simple..I need help locating the civil service laws in Illinois would have been a little bit easier than, saying...oh my chief is black, and so is the guy under me, it's racism, etc.....blah, blah, blah..no one gives two sh*ts about the color of your skin, your sexual or religious orentation, where you came from, or your nationality. It's a matter of how well they think you can get the job done, and how dedicated you are. You sure don't seem to have portrayed that. Simple as that.

So if we can put the stupid bickering and name calling aside....Being a previous union offical, 17 years in the business, been to 1 or 2 fires, AND dealing with this EXACT matter...I can give you some friendly advice...

Unfortunatley....they are probably right about the "home town rule", and most civil service commissions are made up of laymen..some boards have provisions for a FF rep, but mainly people from the street. The claim is to keep an "unbiased" position on who gets hired.

As far as working around the rules...The old dept I was on is in turmoil (thats why I left). The mayor was trying to take control of the civil service commission. After talking to lawyers, state and IAFF officals..the Readrs Digest Condensed version of all that is...the city pretty could do whatever they wanted. They even cited the same "home town rule" BS...

All I can tell you is if you have all these offers take the best one and have and long happy career...I hope your mother is doing well....

BUT throwing threats on these threads will get you no where...In fact there are enough people reading these you might end up offending or insulting a reader that happens to have some connections...

Im not saying anyone here would do this, but its a world of "who you know"..thats just how it is....piss the wrong person off and you might end up "shoveling sh*& in Louisiana"

Mac 17 . . . I haD worked in HR for about 9 before moving in to the Fire Service. Now things maybe different in this case (IE. IL), but what you did is remove yourself from the hiring process by declining the position which gives them the right to keep on moving down the list and not come back to you. IL maybe different, but that's they way it is viewed from the HR perspective. In most cases we in HR would send an acknowledgement letter saying your out. Your fault NOT THEIRS. You eliminated yourself from the process.

There's one thing I do not get . . . so there was a guy next in line after you . . .right. That means he was the next most qualified person, right. (We all know how these processes go.) Why trash the guy for race if we was the next most qualified person? Also, where you number 1 on the list? Turn the situation around, how would you feel if some person jumped in front of you? Would you call it a racial thing at that point. And if you were not number 1 on the list, why weren't you . . . .you certainly paint yourself as being the "most qualified"?

Finally . . . are you really a Marine . . . I thought they were a little less sensitive. Get the sand out of the "old you know what" and suck it up! AND THAT'S MY OPINION!

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors, but I think you have some maturity issues to deal with before you're ready for a fire job. I'm sure you'll be a great firefighter, but it might be for the best if you don't get hired just yet. At my house (and any other house), you'll be eaten alive.

I'll be honest. I didnt read all of it but I got the basics of it. And to be honest, the basic truth is: a lot of departments, I know in my state, and required to have a certain amount of minorities. The larger ones test in the city and then go down to lil Mexico aka San Antionio(I cant spell) and test down there for "minorities" so they can diversify their department. The second largest city in the state(wont name names) has a bad reputation for skipping qualified applicants for "minorities" I met the number one guy on the list who was told that even though they were hiring a ton of people, because he was white, he would either be one of the last or not get hired at all.

Now, as for your situation. One needs to look at other things. Expierence helps but is not all. Maybe you got bad references or a bad interview. Maybe this maybe that. Bottom line is it wont help to get pissed off. Move on and try again elsewhere

now idk how to work this damn forum B.S. but all i know is race does play a roll. Im on the job in chicago. I have been passe up for my promotion 3 times because they had to hire so many blacks over the white firemen. But you need to suck it up because you would never last on a big job. I usually run 7 fires a day. My guys have fallen through floors, down stairs, off roofs, etc, etc, etc. If i had a guylike you in my house(i have before) everyone in my house would rode your ass untill you became another transfery or quitter because someone who is bitching bout not getting his fulltime position isnt going to be trusted to back me up when i need help. if you think im an ******* or dick, go to squad 5 in chicago and tell your story they will probably kick your ass unless run outta the house.
