Bozeman Fire Department and Montana State University recieved an international award for creating maps in new neighborhoods to reduce emergency response time.

The department and the university were awarded the 2005 International Association of Fire Chiefs Fire Service Award for Excellence this month in Denver.

The fire department began working with students in Cooksey's mapping course in 2003 to create accurate, detailed maps of new subdivisions as their term or final project. Bozeman could not afford to update and keep up with the sprawl. Working in teams the students mapped neighborhoods, measured roads, located fire hydrants and mapped entrances to each home.

The resulting maps are carried in the fire engines and entered in the 911 call center's computer system. Bozeman citizens are safer because of this project.

More than 500 apllicants from around the world applied for the award. The award recognizes a department each year for innovation in managing resources to reduce the loss of life and property from fire and other emergencies.
