I use Firefox as an internet browser. Most people use Internet Explorer or IE as a browser just because it came on their computer. Firefox stops all popups and has many other great abilities like tabbed browsing and a password manager.

Try it, you'll like it. It is based on Mozilla which is based on Netscape. It's free.

yes, and I enjoy it much more than IE. then again, I was a big fan of netscape before it went belly up.

firefox is definately the way to go.

and thunderbird is a great alternative to outlook.

and what's the best is that it is all free!!

Yes, yes, and damn straight. The AdBlock extension for Firefox is another kick ass feature. Ad-Banners good bye!

Yeah I moved from IE a long time ago. Firefox is totally the way to go. I am running it on both my XP boxes as well as my Ubuntu desktop machine. Firefox is a great stable browser with lots of very usable options. Can you tell I like it? Thunderbird is also a great email client. I have been playing with in on the Ubuntu machine. So far I have only used to for my Gmail account but It looks like it can do much more.

I read an article on /. that IE7 is more of a mediocre copy of firefox. Anyone tried it?

Jerry it's funny you posted this thread. I had come into this forumn just to create a poll on IE versus Firefox

Post it! I would really like to see more people using Firefox. IE is so vulnerable to hackers and virii.

Firefox has had a few security problems too, but it's much better then IE.

This is proudly posted from Firefox. :P

The use of Open Source extensions makes FF the most versatile choice. It is extremely easy to add plug-ins and such to Fire Fox.

The fact that it is open source pretty much means that there is a TON of add-ons.

If everyone would use it the the Spy-Ware/Ad-Ware conundrum would vanish.

I've been using Firefox for nearly 8 months now, and I love it. It kicks IE's butt all over the place and one minor problem...some pages not displaying properly in Firefox...has been taken care of with an extenssion allowiing you to view a page in IE if needed.

NO Pop-ups. Little worry about viruses (VIRII??? :P )A poerful and versatile download manager.

HEck, Tabbed Browsing and Password Manager are BOTH worth the price...Oh Wait! THERE IS NO PRICE :D It's free! And Open SOurce! New extendions and themes constantly being added.

All in all the way to go and the wave of the future

Tabbed browser windows are awesome once you're used to them. I still find myself pulling the cursor to the bottom of the screen to change windows, sometimes.

I guess I didn't realize IE was so bad. Ignorance is bliss sometimes

I use IE primarily because I do not have a high speed connection at home - we live to far out for DSL and we only have Direct TV for cable - it just takes to long to download anything good :( . I have used FF and Netscape 7 in the past.

I love tabbed browsing and the password manager. IE does have a built in pop up manager now. I use the Google bar so its really not an issue either way for me. As for virus - just keep your virus software up to date and DONT DOWNLOAD ANY PORN DIALERS

Again, I guess I am the outsider. I tried FireFox and didnt like how it over-ran my computer with the Google stuff.

So back to Microsoft based stuff for me. Note- Because of Service Pak2 and the MS anti-spy-ware program, I havent had many security/pop-up issues.

Firefox, while not having nearly as many security exploits as IE, is having it's own fair share of issues as has already been pointed out.

IE is fine on a computer with up-to-date software, and a product like MS anti-spyware, along with a robust internet security package like Norton/Mcaffee, etc. If I didn't have this stuff installed, I'd definetly be using FF.

One annoying thing with FF is that some sites/extensions do not display correctly in it, as they are tailored for IE rendering.

The next version of IE will sport many of the features that FF already has.

I use FF every once-in-awhile just for something different, but I mainly use IE. So that's atleast 2 things we agree on Bou... Glocks and IE. ;)

Yeah baby! 2 for 2! And dont forget the other thing we both agree on- big boobies!

Seriously- I tried FF and it did what I hate about other programs- Over ran my computer and changed things to be Google based. Sorry, Bou doesnt do Google.

I am a happy with pure Microsoft and McAfee protection. (Keeps the Mini-Mes away)

I love the new MAC OS. If you truly want to eliminate any virus threat and mini me's just get a MAC!

I used them a lot when doing web design - i would have one at home but my wife refused to learn the OS - so Windows it is!

Its actually not true that Microsoft products are inherently more prone to attack and that alternatives like Mac OS and Firefox are more secure. The fact is MS software is targeted by most malicious code simply BECAUSE that is what most computers use. If Firefox was the browser of choice of 9/10 web surfers then these nimrods would be developing their exploits to attack that program

IE has been exploited again! a .wmf exploit that installs some malware..

Just another reason for ME to use Firefox....

Stay safe. :D

Wow, on all the boards I am a member of this is the first time someone else has had the same exact rational thought as myself and posted it!!!! BRAVO!

MS OneCare Live and MS Antispyware = No problems with IE. :) Once IE7 pops up with tabbed browsing (props to whoever introduced it first) the FF market share is just going to dwindle down again.

I too was a Netscape guy back in the day. IE 4/5 was the reason I am not...(that and Netscape starting becoming bloatware as is everything AOL touches.)

You realize WMF extentions are filetypes and have nothing to do with IE other than downloading them to your computer. In fact if you use FF to download and run a WMF the same exploit applies. MS could prevent these things if it used the same method FF does and prevented direct interaction. I personally would rather click a link and have it open in Media player than have to download it and then open it seperately. Thats just me though.

HOORAY FOR BOOBIES!

Gotta remember MS is the big dog and more people are out there to make the bugs for it. FF is a small fry, but people are working on it too.

Boobies- I will always be working on them.

That's not true either. Apache web server is used more than IIS (Microsoft's webserver) and it's much less vulnerable to attack.

http://news.netcraft.com/archives/web_server_survey.html
Apache = ~70% marketshare, IIS = ~21% marketshare for December 2005.

MS is an easy target, but it's widespread use is only a contrubuting factor. Design flaws, the (typcally) slower response from MS for updates, and the fact that MS does a poor job at seperating applications form the OS are also contributing factors. On the other hand, open source doesn't automatically mean more secure, but it does often mean better code and faster fixes.

That doesn't matter to the point I was making (or trying to, at least). I was trying to point out that it wasn't a matter of "more Microsoft = more issues". MS products are more prone to attack and often inherently insecure, and that is why they are targeted. The widespread use of MS products is a contributing factor, but not the only reason they are attacked.

That is a correct statement..

Microsoft would be better off offering less to people and providing fewer features... it would actually help them tremendously. The bulk of their insecurities are due to compatibility requests and constantly adding features people ask for without thorough testing. They could easily lock down their software but it would only inconvenience everyone using it.
