The days when a firefighter could actually breathe are over. The PC Police are out in force.

A Canton firefighter was reprimanded for having his picture taken in front of a firetruck with two bikini-clad teenage girls he met while inspecting a building.

The mother is seeking a harsher penalty for the Captain.

yah see the keyword that has the problem there is "teenage" that right there is a major screw up along with other factors.

Yah - but can you tell every single time who is a teen and who is not?

The best thing to do is just refuse to do pictures for anyone - even buffs - which I know has started in some areas.

Not for nothing, but being as close to the ocean as I am, this really would not be even noticed in my area. People walking around and taking pictures in bathing suits is fairly common during the summer.

your right but IMO it is a tasteless type of photo in which should not be taken WILLINGLY unless IMO you know the people , not to say it isnt fun but its just the way it is.

I think it should depend on the context of the picture.

Yeah - the way things are going it would seem that every step a firefighter makes is a mis-step. It's a shame.

How old were they? were they EighTEEN or NineTEEN? If so, what is the problem other than an over-zealous parent trying to exercise control over thier ADULT children?

In addition to seeing the actual photo, I would need to see the department policy on photographs with the public... This PC crap has absolutely gotten out of control.

How does one define when a photo or pose is suggestive, and what is suggestive to one may not be to another. If I was out doing inspections, and was asked to be in a photo, well #1, i'd be honored that someone still thought enough of firefighters to want to be photo'd with them. #2, what kind of message are you sending if you refused.. "sorry ma'am, frankly your attire is to sexually suggestive for me to consider being photographed with you.. if you wouldn't mind popping over to 'Haddims House of Burqa's' they'll fix you up with something a little less revealing"!!!! We are meant to be approachable, we want the public to feel that they can interact with us and that we are on the whole friendly. What if a couple of young boys in swimming trunks wanted their photo taken?? Would I have to wonder if maybe that picture might end up in the hands of Whacko Jacko or a Catholic Priest??? (sorry cheap shot). Tell 'em sorry kid.. we don't do photographs any more, national security.

Now, I'm not defending firehouse porn shoots.. I'm talking about members of the public who approach us in public areas and who are wearing regular attire, including bikini's if the weather is hot (last time I checked, they weren't illegal).. It doesn't matter the age, what if they were 10 yr olds who wanted to be in the photo.. we're not promoting anything sexual.. it's just a GD photo with a firefighter(s). Now I am also assuming no suggestive posing was part of the deal. Now would I pose with say a girl that popped out of a van say wearing lingerie.. nope (not that I wouldn't think about it), while lingerie is legal, it is also designed solely to appear sexual in nature.

So basically, with just the information presented, shame on the Mother who's creating a stink and the Department brass that have been so long separated from their cahoneys so they couldn't stand up and say that nothing illegal or immoral occurred, so no harm no foul!!! (provided it didn't of course).

If I were you, I would blow that picture up to 8 1/2 x 11, and hang one copy over your gear rack, and another over your office. this way you can't be accuse of trying to cover it up.

The whole story........
CANTON, Ohio (AP) - A city firefighter was reprimanded for
having his picture taken in front of a firetruck with two
bikini-clad teenage girls he met while inspecting a building.
Fire Capt. James Hall, 36, a 12-year department veteran, also
was asked to write an apology.
Hall said he asked the girls if they wanted to get their
pictures taken in their bikinis in front of a fire truck. The girls
were wearing tops over their bikinis and were headed to a swimming
pool.
The mothers of the girls said the punishment was insufficient.
"If this was just an average Joe off the street, that would be
different," said Leigh Ann Walters-Dell, mother of one of the
girls photographed July 12. "But these are people we trust to take
care of emergency situations."
Vikki Weiner, the mother of the second girl, called the penalty
"a slap on the wrist."
Safety Director Bernard Hunt and Fire Chief James Scott said the
punishment was sufficient.
Hall was off-duty and beginning vacation Friday and was
unavailable for comment, according to the fire department. The
department agreed to pass along a message seeking comment.

A firefighter, who was wearing clothes, has his picture taken with a citizen, who was also wearing clothes. Where is the crime? Why apologize? Unless there is something to this story that we don't know, I don't see the offense.

And what's with the parents? It's okay for a regular joe to have his picture taken with a girl in a swimsuit... But a firefighter can't because... why? This blows my mind.

girls photographed July 12. "But these are people we trust to take
care of emergency situations."

The mother was later quoted as saying "Obviously, taking pictures with my daughter in her swimsuit lowers the quality of response these firefighters provide in an emergency situation...oh wait, i'm an idiot."

I don't understand why it's alright for her to have her daughter take a picture with an "average joe" off the street, but not a firefighter? This doesn't make any sense to me. People are stupid sometimes.

If the mother is having a problem with the firefighters taking pictures of her daughter wearing a bikini then maybe she shouldn't be sending them to the pool with a attire that might be offending.

But this would involve a level of common sense and personal resposibility that is rapidly disappearing from American society.

You said a mouthful there. I am waiting for President Bush or Karl Rove to be blamed somewhere along the line.

But then again, if personal responsibility and common sense were exercised regularly, the Prisons and the Welfare Lines would be closed.

If the guy did in fact invite the teenage girls to remove thier shirts in order to pose in thier bikinis with him, that is worthy of a good finger wagging or slap on the wrist. Our job is not to seek photo ops with teenage girls to show off back at the hall.

If the girls asked him to pose with them however, and nothing overtly sexual was in the picture, then big friggin deal.

We just had one or our charity BBQ's at the resort this past weekend, and since our BBQ was located on a large public deck along the main promenade of the resort, there were hundreds of bikini-clad ladies walking by on thier way to the resort's pool complex. Many stopped in before or after thier swim for a burger, beer, pop, or photo with a firefighter. We have no problem with that as our guys don't solicite or receive/retain those pictures. They are raising awareness of our dept, it's chosen charity, and usually getting a sale or donation in return.

Now, If one of my guys took it upon himself to take his camera into the pool complex and start asking evey bikini clad girl to take a picture with him, I would have a problem. That does nothing to assist the department, and I would consider it an abuse of his status as a Firefighter.

These mothers probably have their pictures taken with their daughters dressed like that.

I guess the big issue they had was that HE asked them to take a picture with him...

If ANYONE wanted their picture taken with me, firefighter or not, I'd do it and my mom wouldn't care. I'm also teenaged, 19!

Sorry Jack and Chris. You cant have it both ways. Jack states that the "PC Police" are out in full for force then decries our declining values. Chris says that overzealous parents are to blame for being angry, but then rapidly agrees that we are a society in a serious decline. I for one blame Karl Rove... Psych.. But if in fact an on-duty firefighter did indeed ask two (underage) teen-aged girls to take off their shirts and pose in their bikin tops aka bras, thats just plain creepy. Of course, the usual three sides apply to this story..

Did anything ever say that the girls took off their cover-ups? I keep hearing "bikinis with shirts over them", but I never hear, "They took off their shirts and were bikini-only."
