IAFF Support for AFL-CIO Continues Despite Dissident Uprising

July 25, 2005 - As the AFL-CIO 25th Constitutional Convention begins in Chicago this week, IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger is among the most ardent proponents of Federation reform to help the AFL-CIO regain power and influence in the U.S. political arena.

Schaitberger has advocated for change, including a more bi-partisan approach to politics and legislation and a change in the way the Federation communicates to restore labor’s voice in the media. The IAFF Executive Board submitted five resolutions for consideration by convention delegates that reflect these core issues.

Meanwhile, the internal debate over the future of the movement has escalated as four unions announced they are boycotting the convention this week and will likely quit the AFL-CIO altogether. Upset over the labor movement’s decline, these dissident unions – which include the Teamsters, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) and Unite Here – want a change in leadership and sweeping reforms within the Federation. In total seven unions have formed the Change to Win Coalition to offer a plan for change.

President Schaitberger, who has been working to keep the Federation united, told The New York Sun , “Some of the unions want a change in the leadership of the AFL-CIO, and that’s their bottom line. If some of them got every single position that they have put forward as far as program, policy and principle, it still would not be enough.”
