Japs in jungle for 60 yrs
By CHARLES RAE
TWO old men found hiding in a jungle have claimed to be Japanese
soldiers — lost for SIXTY years.
The pair, in their 80s, were reportedly found in the Philippines, scene of fierce Second World War fighting between Japan and the US.
They were found by a man looking for wartime remains on the island of Mindanao.
They were named as Yoshio Yamakawa, 87, and Tsuzuki Nakauchi, 83, and were said to have army equipment.
Reports said they had become separated from their division and had been afraid to go home ever since in case of court martial.
Nakauchi’s family were so sure he was dead they erected a tomb in his memory.
The claims are now being probed by the Japanese government.
The men yesterday failed to keep an appointment with officials, apparently scared by crowds waiting to see them.
One official said: “We can’t verify who they are but we can’t deny it either.”
The Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun said that there may be more than FORTY other Japanese soldiers living in the mountains and that they all want to return to Japan
I am not sure what I think of this story but I have to admit it is interesting.
If they truely were in the jungle for so long how many more old guys are still fighting their own little war around the world
