Why Should I Move to Farmington Hills

I was hoping to gather some opinions that will hopefully be of some use. My wife is a 3rd year medical student. This time next year we will be moving somewhere for her to complete her residency. A few programs have risen to the top.

One is located in Farmington Hills. What I am asking for is your opinion as to why Farmington Hills is a good or bad place to live. If I knew I wouldn't be asking. Just looking for a little fat to chew on from some folks who know instead of some fancy chamber of commerce fluff. Thanks for reading and for any replies.

Although I didn't live in Farmington Hills, I lived in Novi right next door I might be able to help.

It's a great school district, the area is pretty decent and not a ton of crime like other areas. Things are pretty close by so you dont have to run all over the place to get to a decent size store, Twelve Oaks mall is just down 12 mile, and the expressway is close by.

If you have kids in school the school district is excellent. At least I think so I graduated from Novi some 15 years ago now. My parents actually still live in Novi and I live up north, and although it has changed with all the little punk rich kids who are there, the area is great and the property value is good.

Depending on where you are moving from, if you have kids etc, will depend on what you are looking for. I don't know about the property taxes or anything in the area, but I am sure you can go to city hall and get more info on that.

EDIT: It looks like you might be from out of state, if so, Farmington Hills is a very nice city, in Oakland County which is (I Believe) the wealthiest county in the country. It is more of a white collar city and is located about 30-45 minutes NW of Detroit.

The traffic’s a mess. I had the pleasure of my car dieing on me at 10 and Halsted last week. Not fun.

But the traffic should get better once Novi finishes their never-ending construction projects. It seems all of the good north-south roads are closed.

A good thing is whatever you need, it is most likely close by and a short trip (if you avoid the construction).

It's a bit strange not knowing where I'll be living 12 months from now. Sorta tough to make some long term plans. But if my lovely wife is willing to do what it takes to be a doc, then I will surely follow. Whether Michigan, Ohio, NJ, PA, or wherever. Just anyplace BUT Los Angeles. ;)

HUH? How on earth can you compare the two? It would seem to me that you have never been to Los Angeles.

Ann Arbor is a hoppin' college town (GO BLUE!), but LA it is not!

Take it from someone who lives in Ann Arbor and has been to L.A; They are NOTHING alike. I love Ann Arbor. The school system is ranked nationally every year. I don't think the L.A. schools are.;)

What about Madison Heights, Pontiac or Warren?

No offense to anyone living in Pontiac or Warren, but I wouldn't live in either of those two cities. Just take a look at some crime statistics and you'll see why. I hear the schools are a joke. Warren is pretty much broke. I think they just layed off a bunch of firefighters not too long ago.
If a city as a whole is on the rise, staying the same, or going down, I say they are going down.
Don't know much about Madison Heights but never heard anything good.

Warren is a place to avoid at all costs. The mayor is crooked and is running the city into the ground. As was mentioned above, several firefighters lost their jobs there in a move that wasn't for financial reasons but for political retaliation. I won't even drive through Warren if I can avoid it.

Pontiac is better than Warren, but I don't think I would live there... I will drive through it, though.

Madison Heights is a small community that seems to hide in the shadows of Troy. Never hear much news coming from there, so I would take that as a good sign.

Out of all the cities you posted, I would say Farmington Hills is your best bet and is a 10 out of 10 as opposed to 5 or 6 out of 10 like many of the other cities you mentioned.

Someone from the East Side (Warren) can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that borders on Detroit around 8 mile, which is not a good area.

My next door neighbor is a retired Warren Fire Chief who now lives up north where I do. If you have any questions for Warren specifically let me know and I can get them answered. He retired like 10 years ago but I am sure he still knows quite a bit. It sounds like they had a few stations there from what he told me and ran quite a few calls a year.

Again I think Farmington Hills is your best bet, nicer area, much better schools, and less crime.

Pontiac is pretty much a hole. Since the Lions left the silverdome the city went even further downhill from what I understand and is a pretty high crime area as well.
