View Full Version : What siren is that?

I was watching the Pierce Co. Wash episode a few weeks ago. The patrol car had a siren that had a feature where it would have aprox 4 seconds of yelp and then 4 or 5 cycles of some type of fururistic hi-lo.
Anyone know which siren that could be?

One of the local EMS companies runs a similar siren, I bliee it's entitled "Thunder" maybe I'm only 80% sure of it.

whilest not seing the episode you used to be able to take the old Federal electronic sirens and place the selector knob between yelp and wail and it would make a mighty interesting sound .......

LOL...one of my dogs doesn't yelp like most do...she sounds like a cross between a bellowing cow and and very pissed off pig...should record that and sell it to the siren companies as "Baskerville" cause it creeps the hell out of you when she does it!

Ok, since I have had to order and instal these before, here
is the real answer you are looking for. (Gee, I am getting
more whacker now) The electronic siren used my the Piece
County, WA Sheriff's office is the Unitrol Touchmaster.
Seriously, the best electronic siren ever built because
these last forever, ease of use and multi-functioned in
one unit. Plus, the aggressive sound of this siren seriously
clears traffic.
The multi-chimed siren you heard is called the "pursuit
option" that cycles through the the 3 modes. (Wail, Yelp
and Hi-Lo) Note- Hi-lo is illegal to use in California.
I stay up on this stuff because I dont want to get hit
while driving code 3 in traffic. Which means, I dont
want to go to court. Which really means I dont want to go
to jail.

Put the selector knob to YELP. Take the microphone to the siren head and as the thing is doing its thing in the yelp mode, keep pushing the microphone button in and out and you will get a sound that it wild. Works best if you have a driver and you are in the right front seat. :D

Talk about lasting forever, the old Federal Interceptors (ours had a blue faceplate) were solid. Just like the old Twin-Sonic lightbars by Federal (the square ones). One, two bulb rotator in each end, casscade mirrors and one motor with a chain drive. Like a rock:cool:
Whacker mode off :p

True- Those old units were solid.
I do like the Touchmasters, they are simple to use and
are wired into the steering wheel horn button. Just tap
it for manual use ot yelp override.

We're kinda partial to the old SVP SA441 Magnum
Now known as the SS741 from Star Products.
http://www.star1889.com/ss741mg.htm
It drives dual 100W speakers with independant drivers & when in "Magnum Mode" will play a different tone through each speaker (like wail in one & Hi-Lo in the other, etc.)
Sounds even better in tight alleys when you get the echo effect going.

N2DFire- If you ever get to bust traffic with a Touchmaster
like seen on COPS, you wont want to give it back. It sounds
like a professional siren to move traffic, not like a modified
car alarm.
Great product.

Anyone remember "sniglets" from Not (Necessarily) The News? I'll have to go hunt for the Fire/EMS sniglets.... but the interesting sounds you generate by holding the siren selector between settings are known as "yailenwelps" :D :D
Another one from the top of my head..... Running "Code 1.5" is when you activate the siren but forget to turn on your red lights. ;)

Yes, the Federal Interceptors could make some goofy sounds. We still have one in our 1978 Tele-Squrt....... Originally only a 4 tone siren (Manual, Wail, Yelp and Hi-Lo), but it becomes a 6 tone siren when you include half way between wail and yelp and then between yelp and hi-lo. Sometimes you can even get a 2nd or 3rd tone between each section if you move it just right.........
Code 3 also has a Hyper-Lo on the Mastercom Siren that when you have it on Hi-Lo and hit the Manual button you will get the Hyper-Lo...

Give me a Q and a Powercall any day.
The "Intersection" mode on the Powercall DX-5 sounds like the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse ;) http://www.powercallsirens.com/inter.wav

I admit, that description made me finally go and listen. Your description is accurate! On one hand I like it, but on the other hand I don't like freaking out other drivers so much that they panic and drive onto the sidewalk or down embankments! Still, a siren with an iron fist has its place, and this certainly is it. Wow.

If someone here can please show me how to post a short video
clip, I will post 2 short bits showing the Touchmasters in
action. Warning- Some members may wack to them.
After that, it will be game over for the others. the
Touchmasters clear the intersection like a siren should and does not sound like a modified car alarm. Period.

If you convert them to ZIP files - and if they are not too large - you can attach them to a post. ZIP is one of the allowed formats....

Some really nice person here hooked us up. Please note that
Clark County Fire is running dual electronics and the Rescue
even has a grinder too boot.
Sone video of the engine, I missed the yelp over ride in the
intersection, but you get the idea. Also, these streets are
some of the busiest in the NATION. You they gotta move
traffic there right now.
Have fun and enjoy...Bou
