At the request of reserve172, I wanted to post this poll. We were talking about Johnny and Roy and how many people know of them in one of the EMS threads. So here's your chance.

Personally, I remember watching the later episodes and seeing them in re-runs. Still like to watch them every once in a while when I see it on TV, which is quite rare actually. Yeah, I am a whacker.

Just trying to gauge (no, not Gage - LOL!) who recalls the show and how.

DaSharkie--- I'm glad you decided to post this thread here in the Fire Forum as well as the EMS side. I know Johnny and Roy were Paramedics but I think the show had an influence on many firefighters too. As a little kid, I looked forward to watching Emergency! every Saturday night. There was nothing more exciting than when those tones went off---- then, "KMG365", or something like that. Nice thread. :)

I wasn't against posting it, just didn't want ot move it here. I just hear more Paramedics relating to the show than firefighters. I think it all has to do with popping those med tops.

I brought in a tape to the station last week and some of the young guns started watching it and tearing it apart. No hoods! No bunker pants! No SCBA enroute! I had to explain to them that this is how it was done "back in the day".

Really was a very realistic look at fire department operations... much more so than today's movies and TV shows.

I've watched a few times in re-runs but never really cared for it.

Go easy on him, he's young and sort of has an excuse in his ignorance. :p :D

I was born in 72, so therefore only a wee pup of 4 or 5 during the latter years of the original series, but it was definitely my favourite show both then, and on through syndication. :)

Last year, it was run late nights on an Eastern Canadian TV channel I get on satellite, and so I got to watch (TIVO'd) episode 1 (pilot movie) on through the first two seasons over the period of a few months. It was great to see it again.

I did notice that the continuity was a little shabby early on though. When they filmed the response scenes, you could still catch splices of old engines and 60's squads sub'ed in for the Engine and Squad 51. ;) :)

Kevin Tighe (Roy) was just on an episode of Law & Order or something like that last week too.

Guess I am getting old because I remember watching this show
prime time as a very young kid. It was simply awesome.

Then, as an Explorer in the 80s, I got to use the
"ApCor" orange communication box on calls with our medics.
I wouldnt get to talk much on it, but I was able to dial
in the freq. to talk to the hospital.

Still a great show. There is a lot of history behind it that
most people may not know about. The bill that went through
the California legislature to enact Paramedics, LA County
being a test area with just a hand full of Paramedics, etc.

Thanks for bringing it up.

I, Sir, did not cave! I simply reproduced. :D

Yes, you may vote again. You're probably the sneaky little bugger that clicked "Who in the heck are Johnny & Roy?" in the last poll anyway.

I remember seeing Randolph Mantooth on an episode of JAG as a Marine. Fit the part pretty well for a crusty old Colonel. Much better haircut than that picture Bou posted too. :D

The characters Marco Lopez and Mike Stoker were actual LA County firefighters assigned to the show and "acted" nder their real names. The late James O. Page, the editor emeritus of Fire Rescue Magazine was the technical advisor for the show.

Randy Mantooth is also a part of rock and roll history. He was mentioned in the lyrics of the song "What Do You Want From Life" by the Tubes on their debut album in 1975.

What Do You Want From Life
Spooner/Evans

What do you want from life
To kidnap an heiress
or threaten her with a knife
What do you want from life
To get cable TV
and watch it every night

There you sit
a lump in your chair
Where do you sleep
and what do you wear
when you're sleeping

What do you want from life
An Indian guru
to show you the inner light
What do you want from life
a meaningless love affair
with a girl that you met tonight

How can you tell when you're doin' alright
Does your bank account swell
While you're dreaming at night
How do know when you're really in love
Do violins play when you're touching the one
That you're loving

What do you want from life
Someone to love
and somebody that you can trust
What do you want from life
To try and be happy
while you do the nasty things you must

Well, you can't have that, but if you're an American citizen you are entitled to:
a heated kidney shaped pool,
a microwave oven--don't watch the food cook,
a Dyna-Gym--I'll personally demonstrate it in the privacy of your own home,
a king-size Titanic unsinkable Molly Brown waterbed with polybendum,
a foolproof plan and an airtight alibi,
real simulated Indian jewelry,
a Gucci shoetree,
a year's supply of antibiotics,
a personally autographed picture of Randy Mantooth
and Bob Dylan's new unlisted phone number,
a beautifully restored 3rd Reich swizzle stick,
Rosemary's baby,
a dream date in kneepads with Paul Williams,
a new Matador, a new mastodon,
a Maverick, a Mustang, a Montego,
a Merc Montclair, a Mark IV, a meteor,
a Mercedes, an MG, or a Malibu,
a Mort Moriarty, a Maserati, a Mack truck,
a Mazda, a new Monza, or a moped,
a Winnebago--Hell, a herd of Winnebago's we're giving 'em away,
or how about a McCulloch chainsaw,
a Las Vegas wedding,
a Mexican divorce,
a solid gold Kama Sutra coffee pot,
or a baby's arm holding an apple?

Admit it, brothers... you all had the hots for Nurse Dix McCall!

- Dont forget Engineer Mike Stoker, he was the real deal too.

- Nurse Dix- yeah, she was hot and married to Doctor Early in
real life.

- As far as I know, LACo Fire Captain John Price was in a
few scenes of the show and still on the job today. (Last I
heard)

Must say that this is what gave fire/ems the recognition we have today. The paramedic service would not have evolved as it has if the show did not stress the need for pre-hospital care. Yea I watched it when it was originally on and have seen the re-runs. I must say that I have even used some of the same equipment shown on the show. :D

I don't think I missed an episode...ever.
I remember using one of the monitors that was a simple oscilloscope with the bouncing ball indicating the rhythm. Dementia and senility prevent me from recalling the brand name. Talk about a pain in the arse to read though. We commented more than once about how nice it would be to have one of those "new" Life Pack 5's.

Sorry Capt. I have to disagree with you on this one. Lopez was an actor not a fire fighter. If you remember he was also in other Jack Webb productions Adam-12 and Dragnet. In the later seasons of the show during the credits the word "specialist" was placed next to Stokers name to indicate his actual knowledge of the job.

The 1st timne we used brista-jets in medic clinical...I did the station 51 tone sound and said rampart rampart...and then did the cap flip....got some weird looks from my younger classmates...the TA just laughed....

I was a consultant on the extrication scenes in the show. Many of the "JAWS" techniques were in their infancy during the production of this show...and the Executive Producer, Jack Webb, called me at home in 1970...when the original concept for the series was presented. I met with Harold Bloom shortly thereafter to discuss the "new" extrication equipment.

Now there's a tall tale:eek:

Being born in '80, I saw the show in reruns. They came on when I got home from school. Then it disappeared, noooooooooooooo, still trying to recover from it :( . That show was a big deal in my house.

Big deal, Ed.
I was the technical advisor for the driving sequences.
But I have since turned my attention to writing an episodic tale of two guys who don't even remotely resemble Gage and DeSoto.
The Adventures of Jake and Vinnie will get big some day.
Some day.

Ahh Fond memories. Dad and the kids downstairs watching Emergency and my Mom would be in my parents bedroom watching CBS, which had a stellar Saturday night line-up in those days. My Dad went to paramedic school in 1973, so it was a pretty heady time around our house. And yes, after 18 years as a paramedic, I STILL flip those little yellow caps

Cough, cough**whacker**cough, cough. :D

Nice to know that the younger ones have no regard for history, but your teacher did. How mush talking behind your back did they do that night?

"Man, that old guy is weird, what was that noise thing he did?"

"Yeah, and what the heck is a rampart?"

I was calling into one of our local hospitals to give a report. Upon completing the pt report the MD on the other end must have been having a good day because I hear "ten-four Rampart clear". Playing along I said Squad 51 clear. Gave the doc a little start to realize he wasnt the only one that knew what he was talking about! :D

I always admired Dixie's spunk.
Johnny was the bomb; if he would have been in the local fire station you can bet I would have found some way to spend time there.
That hound dog they had was the laziest thing I ever saw; what was his name?
And MAN, DO I EVER LOVE THOSE TONES!!!

DaSharkie, That was a clinical night after bacsically being up for 24 hours. Needless to say I was a little punchy:D
"Man, that old guy is weird, what was that noise thing he did?"
The problem with that is, I'm only 25...These "kids" aren't too much younger than me.:p
How mush talking behind your back did they do that night?
Not much more than usual...After I did that...when we got back to the classroom, the professor had some Emergency clips on his computer and played them for the class.
