In a notice posted to its Web site Thursday, Microsoft said to expect critical fixes for Windows, Office, MSN Messenger and Exchange. In all, the software maker said it is planning to release eight patches, five of them for Windows.

In addition, Microsoft will release a new version of its malicious software removal tool, which is a sort of basic antiviral software that removes specific known bugs from a machine. The company said it will have two high-priority Windows upgrades that are not related to security issues that will be made available via its automatic Windows Update service.

The software maker had no regularly scheduled security patches last month, after releasing a dozen updates in February. That month, the company also fixed a security hole in its the digital rights technology within Windows Media Player.

In an effort to help businesses manage the company's security patches, Microsoft has gone to a once-a-month schedule for most fixes. More recently, the company has begun publicly outlining what patches to expect just prior to releasing the patches themselves.

Two things...right now there is a scam out there offering the

I got nailed a couple weeks ago with some brutal hijacker software. It kept redirecting me to some search engine, or popping up adds whenever I was online.

Downloading and running Ad-aware, and Spybot S&D (both free) seemed to have taken care of it, but I'll definitely be more careful with those "Official" looking update downloads.

For a machine that supposedly revolutionized the world, It sure pushes my buttons on a daily basis.

Unless you like to fiddle with stuff, deal with a limited amount of available software, and deal in a more user-unfriendly environment (peripherals/accessories, etc)... don't swap to Linux quite yet.

Apple's OSX would be a far better choice...

... IF you feel the need to ditch XP.

"Open source" doesn't scream of "secure" to me.

I am probably like most people. I use XP and used to all of
the features, updates, etc. I only know Windows and get what
I need from it.

Hope that makes sense...Bou

Ah geeze 14,yah know I could have about twice as much fun with the Leftcoaster if you weren't compelled to make everything logical.I was hoping to "spur"Bou into doing some research but: Linux is, as 14 pointed out, a limited access software. As such it's quite stable and less prone to attack by hackers and such. However a lot of the programs we use don't integrate well with it for the above reasons.Excuse me now,I need to go straighten out a small matter in Yarmouth.Damn yankees, hehe T.C.

Hehe...I thought about it, but knew it was going to be a
waste of time. I have heard of Linux, but I think everything
is prone to attacks, hackers, backgdoors, etc.
