ST. MARTIN, Miss. (AP) - The Jackson County Board of Supervisors
will be accepting bids Monday for a decontamination tent.
Ideas for the tent came after T&N Feed and Hardware caught fire
on March 11, burning insecticides, feed, pesticides and
fertilizers. Firefighters and emergency responders had to be
stripped down and decontaminated out in the open.
"Everyone on the scene had to be scrubbed down and
decontaminated before they could leave. All the trucks had to be
washed down. We sprayed them down there and then we had to wash
them off real good. All of it had to be scrubbed down with
decontaminant," said Wayne King, fire chief at Latimer Volunteer
Fire Department.
Emergency management director Butch Loper said a mass
decontamination tent would provide privacy and reduce effects of
the wind.
"If you have people exposed to chemicals, perhaps a weapon of
massive destruction event and it creates a chemical cloud, we would
scrub them down before sending them to the hospital or putting them
into an ambulance," Loper explained.
