View Full Version : Painting a tarp -- NEED HELP!

If one desired to place some lettering on a typical hardware store tarp (polyester/vinyl), is there ANYTHING that will stick to this material? Or, to be more specific, is there anything that will bond or "soak-in" to it?

Thinking I had found the exact product I needed at the automotive supply center, I tried "vinyl dye". This does not seem to work... it just rubs off like everything else.

I'm going to try Krylon Fusion as a shot in the dark. The problem with paints, though, is they tend to flake and peel when the tarp moves/bends. It would seem that a compound like PVC glue would be needed to "eat" into the material.

Does ANYONE know if there is something that will permanently bond to this material? I'm desperate...:D

Maybe not paint it on but embroider? As in sew it on similar to a monogram on clothing? I'm not sure just what you are painting on so this suggestion may get filed under "G". Just thinking outside the box so to speak. Good luck 'cause that is the only thing I have come up with for you.

Actually, The ones that are vinyl type are disposable! The are shouldn't be referred to as "TARPS" but as covers.

If you have to mark them at all, try using a paint that will stay on the vinyl. Check with you local paint store for the type of paint to use.

If you have the canvas tarps, the real ones, then using a good grade white gloss enamel at the corners will do an outstanding job of ID'ing your company!

Use a decal - the glue you can get on them will stick to damn near anything. Also pick a decal that is plyable when folding. I recommend going to see a graphic shop - same guys that do cars and stuff. We have done several tents with tarped in sides - no problems.....yet!

Come to think of it, I would try a Sharpie. Maybe along one edge? Thats what we do with our good salvage covers.

We dont mark our blue tarps, as we usualy leave them at the scene They are cheap so we always try to have spares back at the house.

We have always marked those tarps with a Sanford wide tip permanent marker. As long as you let it dry before you fold the tarp up it will last longer than the tarp!!

By the way, those cheapie tarps are completely ISO compliant. So if your ISO visit is coming and you want credit for more salvage covers buy the cheapies to supplement your good covers.
