My cobra cb finaly died, and I am looking at getting a midland 79-290 and I was wondering what does it mean by 40 AM, 40 USB, and 40 LSB channels? What does each mean and Do I need a license to operate on them. Plus what does a regular CB radio operate on?

Citizen's Band uses an AM (amplitude-modulated) signal on forty channels centered around 27 Mhz.

USB (Upper Sideband) and LSB (Lower Sideband) operate above and below the individual 40 channels, on FM (Frequency modulation)

No special license are required for their operation.

Back in the late 70s and early 80s I was pretty heavily involved in CB radio. Midlands were the best radios for me back then, so I would expect them to still be a good radio today.

Also, What is the best antenna that you have had experience with. I am currently using radioshack glass mount scanner antenas for a short period of time. I will be selling 2 vechs next month and investing in a newer(old) crown vic. But I dont want to mount a huge whip to it. What is the best cellular like cb antenna that you have had experience with. Glass or body mount.

No cellular look-alike antenna will work worth beans on a CB. First, forget a glass mount antenna. The wavelength of CB is just not right for that and you will have a lot of loss going through the glasss. Second, CB needs a BIG antenna to be efficiant. No little low-profile or cellular look-alike antenna meets that bill. You will have very poor performance both TX and RX. I would start at 4' and go from there to be worth anything. And finally, magnetic antennas suck. If you are feeling brake, get a permanently mounted one and you will find it works much better.

Don't forget to check your SWR.

they still make a K-40 anntenna ? Used to run one of those on the mobile. Had a 40 ch Royce CB for the base. A friend of mine had a directional antenna with a CObra 2000 base ......... that would talk almost anywhere.........
