This past weekend, I attended a funeral for a 46 year firefighter in my department who succumbed to cancer earlier in the week. As for saluting him as his coffin went by, I was not sure which right hand salute was the correct one to use; the one over the heart or the military style, as I have had a little time in the service and not all dept. members have uniforms. If anyone can fill me in on the proper protocols, I would most appreciate it. This was the first such dept. event I have been to since I joined the dept. over a year ago. I do not want to seem like I am dissing anyone, I just want to get it right. Thank you.

Generally speaking, a military salute is common and expected from those in uniform - especially with a passing of the colors and/or casket when draped with our nation's flag; a removal of one's hat with right hand over the heart is appropriate for similar circumstances by those not in uniform, including civilians.

I second Brian's sentiment.

Uniformed personnel should stand at attention and salute. Non-uniformed personnel should stand erect with hand over heart.

Thanks for the help on this. I sure appreciate it. It kind of caught me off guard so soon after joining my department, abeit in a support role. Thanks to you gentlemen, I will be sure and get it right the next time.

Let us pray that it will be a long time before the protocol will be needed.

Stay Safe and Be Well,
