Darwin candidate? She then issued profanities!
CANTON, Ohio (AP) - A woman was sniffing propane in the back of
a van when her husband entered the van with a lighted cigarette,
causing an explosion that ripped the roof off the vehicle.
Donald Rohrig was taken to Akron Children's Hospital and was
listed in good condition. His wife, Tammy Rohrig, was taken to
Aultman Hospital and was listed in satisfactory condition.
Firefighters said Tammy Rohrig had been sniffing propane in a
van Tuesday evening when Donald Rohrig went out to look for her.
Gordon Black of the Fire Prevention Bureau said Donald Rohrig went
into the van with a lighted cigarette, causing it to explode.
The explosion caused a flash fire, which was contained to the
van, according to the Fire Department.
Harry Cavitt, a retired firefighter who lives a half-mile away,
said he had never seen anything like this before.
"It's just scary thinking about it," said neighbor Lillie
Johnson, Cavitt's mother.
Firefighters were called out to the house in October for another
propane-related situation. Officials said the house was full of a
propane smell and had to be ventilated by the Fire Department.

The use of inhalants ("huffing")is more popular than you might think. Although it is odd to find someone this old doing it. Usually it is HS kids.
I have investigated fatalities where:
a. Kids were in a car sniffing out of a bowl of gasoline, when someone lit a cigarette.
b. A kid was huffing LPG in his basement by pulling a coat over his hear like a tent and cracking the cylinder. Trouble was he was behind the furnace and water heater.
c. A young male was huffing gasoline out of a mini-bike gas tank in his basement. He vecame dizzy, fell over with the bike, spilling the gasoline on his and, unfortunately, the water heater. He was engilfed in flames and actually ran through the house and out into the street before he died.
d. These girls didn't die, but they were huffing cheap hair spray in a closed up car. One of them lit a cigarette. A Mall Security Guard was a witness to the enduing flash fire that caused 2nd and 3rd degree burns to their heads and upper bodies. Hairdos were DOA.
This is a cheap high whose popularity usually runs in cycles in thr HS. In one area, we experienced a ras of thefts of small LPG tanks.

Learn something new everyday....I'm familiar with what 'huffing' is, but huffing LPG? You gotta be real hard up for entertainment!

This form of substance abuse is very popular is, shall we say, the less well to do areas that we cover over here.
We had a case a few years ago where 3 kids weer sniffing lighter fuel in a nedroom of the house when the vapours ignited, killing one of them, and badly burning the other two. The roof of the house was dislodged by about 6 inches by the blast.
Apparently its a quicker high than some drugs and obviously easier to get hold of.

George, thanks for the info. Like TCFire said, I've heard of huffing all kinds of substances but never Propane!

That's too funny. Sometimes in the summer at our firehouse, we have the freon in our air conditioning unit go low. It may just be some strange coincidence, but it seems to magically get low when the prisoners come to mow the yard and LZ for us. Maybe they are huffing the freon.

It would be easy to tell if they had been sniffing Freon, you would have a bad smell around the station and would constantly be tripping over the bodies.

...This is why you have to be 18 to buy aerosol products, white out, glue, etc at Wal-Mart.

To each their own. Some people enjoy sniffing propane...some enjoy their own farts. Both can be deadly.....
