View Full Version : Getting new knee joints!

Well, as some of you know, I have been walking around on a couple of bad knees. I have had 4 surgeries on the left one and 7 surgeries on the right one. I have suffered from osteoarthritis since I was 19 years old. I have been on a steady diet of anti-inflammatories for the past several years. I cannot take them anymore for fear of liver/kidney damage. The past few weeks have been intolerable.
I saw my orthopedic doctor last Friday and we set up an appointment with Dr. Driesnack, who will set my surgery date for a bilateral knee joint replacement, hopefully by year's end. When he said that it was time to replace them, I cried like a baby. I have no idea what it will be like to be pain free. Even with the anti-inflammatories, they still hurt. I didn't realize how effective they were until they took me off of them. I cannot be on my feet for more than an hour at a time. I finally gave in today and called his office and they have prescribed me Tramadol until my appointment of Nov. 24th.
I am soooo looking forward to the new joints.
You cannot imagine how the pain can affect your outlook on Life.
I have tried very hard not to let it limit my normal activities, but if I ever have grandchildren, I will be able to play "horsey" like a normal grandpa.
Whoopee!

Art good luck .........in 2000 my dad had his right knee replaced, it was very arthritic and actually over the years effected his gait. He has been pain free and had minimal difficulty. I can tell you that the only set back he has is how he gets up and down from the ground, he cannot be on all fours. So I am not trying to bust your bubble and I know this will be a great relief on you and you should be recovered just in time for the spring links to open up !

Art, Congratulations on your new body parts! All kidding aside, I sincerely wish you a speedy recovery. They say the first month or so is a real bitch after that surgery, but you will start to feel remarkably better after that. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Maybe next summer I can get my ass kicked in golf by you and your new knees.

Art, I'm glad to hear that you are finally going to be pain free. I know from the few times that you've mentioned it that it is something that has been very difficult to live with. When you are going through recovery just keep reminding yourself of all the things you will be able to do, and that you will be able to do them without pain meds. Keep us posted.

Just think, CR. Problems since you were 19; the post-procedure therapy can't be any where near that bad or take that long. I've got the same issue facing me at some point, but only on the starboard side. Mine grinds so bad, people next to me can often hear it when I get up from a crouch.

In any event, relax, get ya a stash of your favorite cigars and hootch, and coast through the winter. You'll be good to go by the time it's 'bike season again. Piece o' cake! ;)

Art, thoughts and prayers are with you. My wife had back surgery last year (2 separate procedures through the front and the back to place pins) to correct back pain she's had since high school from degenerative discs. She is so much happier now since she is practically pain free. I expect you to be back on the golf course in no time with your new hinges.:D

Art, have I misread your post? I understood it to say that the appt with the Dr to set the surgery date was on Nov 24, and that they are hoping to have your surgery done before the New Year. Looking at other people's replies I'm not sure if it is they or me who have misread or misunderstood.

I guess the WOT is the only one that can read in this bunch. CR, it does indeed say that your appointment with the doc is Nov. 24 and not the actual surgery. I was really worried about you eating hospital turkey. Now that won't be a problem. Our little misunderstanding in no way takes away from our best wishes for a successful surgery.

CR,

If you are able, could you pass your surgical/recovery experiences along to me? I've got two friends on my department who are going to be facing the same thing in the not-too-distant future. They're understandably anxious about it and would appreciate an unbiased account from someone who really understands the fire service.

Best wishes for a sppedy recovery.

(Make damn sure you do everything your physical therapist says. They can be a royal pain, but they're usually right when it comes to things like this. I oughta know - I'm married to one and she's had to rehab my shoulder twice. Ouch!)

Be glad to. Maybe I should keep a journal. Take it from a guy who has been under the knife 11 times; it's the anaesthesiologist that I want the book on. Anyone can cut, but give me the guy who literally holds your life in his hands.
I found out early on that you have to do what the PT tells you.
It hurts like hell, but the payoff is worth it.
Thanks for the thoughts.
Jack; I am hoping that the doctor schedules the surgery asap on Nov. 24th. It can't come soon enough.

CR'S KNEE JOURNAL
Friday, November 5, 2004:
Went to my appointment with my orthopedic doctor at 2:50 pm.
It is my intent to have my anti-inflammatory, non-steriodal (AINS) medication renewed.
As Dr. O reviews my medical history, he discovers that I have been taking AINS for my arthritis and degenerative joint disease for the past 15 years. It is his opinion that the drugs have become ineffective and may be causing permanent liver/kidney damage. He says that it is time for new knee joints; music to my ears.
An appointment with the knee surgeon for a pre-surgery consultation is made for Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at 1:30 pm.
It can't come soon enough.
More later.

New entries to my journal:
CR'S KNEE JOURNAL
Monday, November 15, 2004

It has been 10 days since I was taken off my knee medication and the pain is excruciating. It is waking me up at night, cramps in both legs are occurring with more intensity and frequency and morning stiffness in both knees is extremely painful. I cannot get on them and walk until I have sat and flexed them for a time.
The pain is affecting my mood, so I call my family physician and ask if he would prescribe pain meds until my 11/24 appointment. He prescribes Ultram. It is effective. Joints are still stiff in the morning, but less painful.

Wednesday, November 24, 2004

Today, I am to see the orthopedic surgeon for my consultation. I have been told by many that Dr. D is one of the best joint specialists in the country. My appointment is for 1:30 pm.
I am taken into an exam room at 2:45 pm. I don’t mind the lateness; I am feeling the effects of the Ultram and reading about Bush’s victory.
The nurse is going over my health survey. They seem to be prying; asking about tobacco and alcohol use. I just want my knees fixed; we can talk morality later, I was thinking to myself.
They order X-rays and I trot off in my paper, exam shorts to the X-ray lab. There, he takes 6 views of each leg.
I am returned to the exam room, where I continue to read about the annihilation of the Democrats.
The doctor comes in and immediately starts his exam after a firm handshake.
He has me walk for him. He manipulates my joints. He looks at the X-rays. He makes notes, saying very little.
He breaks his silence with, “You have two, very bad knee joints that are in need of replacement”.
I would like them both done at the same time. He tells me that, due to the condition of the knees, he will do one at a time, for fear of complications. He explains that, typically, joints are replaced in people who have not had that many previous surgeries and especially ones that aren’t as complicated as mine. He will have to remove staples and wear plates in my right knee before he does anything else. The seven, previous surgeries on that knee aren’t doing me any favors at the moment. Plus, because of all the scars and scar tissue, he is concerned about the skin healing, so we must also involve a plastic surgeon, Dr. M. AND then there’s my history with post surgery infections and feels that my immune system might be weakened from all of the antibiotics that I have taken, so he believes that, if I am attacked by an infection after surgery, amputation of the right leg is a very real possibility.
Wait a minute; could we back up to that part where you said that you may have to cut off my leg above the knee?
I have had numerous discussions about my knees, but amputation has never been an option; at least not openly discussed with me. The doctor re-assures me that he believes that we will have a positive outcome. That’s the spirit, Doc!
But I keep thinking about GOLF! Crazy, huh? At that moment, I wasn’t thinking about the other ways an artificial leg would change my life. In my mind, I was trying to imagine putting my weight on my right leg as I come down and swing through the ball! Thank God, I’m not obsessed with the game.
We talk about the left leg; my “good” leg. Because the bones in the lower leg are curved, he will have to straighten the bones when he replaces the knee joint or we will have a grossly, misaligned joint.
Doctor D asks me if I want to hold off or get something done sometime next year?
I break down in a flood of emotion and I tell him that I am tired of the constant pain, the “one step at a time” when I go down the stairs, the lack of mobility in the right leg-sometimes I can’t bend it enough to get up over a CURB-and that I want something done as soon as possible.
He whispers something to his nurse and she leaves. The doctor is making notes and I’m still wrestling with the possibility of losing my right leg. My thoughts are:
Do I leave it on for sex or do I take it off?
Will it be an acceptable excuse if I get pulled over for speeding? Sorry, Officer; I don’t have a right leg and couldn’t feel the accelerator.
I was also thinking about if I could still ride my bicycle.
But my biggest concern was if it would change how my wife feels about me.
The nurse came back with the good doctor’s schedule. He is booked solid clear through February, 2005. He was due to start vacation on December 20th, but Nurse Heather said that he could book an OR for that day, if he wanted to postpone his vacation by one day. He says he would. He asks if I want to have it done that quickly and I almost kissed him; I mean, his nurse.
So, he tells his nurse to book an OR for 4 hours and that it will be the only surgery that he does that day.
He tells me that I can expect to be in the hospital 4-5 days.
Whoopee; I’ll be home for Christmas!
I’m thinking of the song “all’s I want for Christmas is my new right knee”.
We finish up this visit by giving blood, getting two more X-rays and setting up a consultation with the plastic surgeon.
I will still have a knee “class” to attend and all of the pre-testing before surgery.
Monday, December 20, 2004 is the day that my right knee-my “worst” knee-will be replaced.
It will be my best Christmas ever!
More later.

Received a phone call from my orthopedic surgeon's office today.
They gave me my schedule of upcoming appointments and to tell me that I must get clearance from my DENTIST for my knee replacement surgery. I argued. It made no sense to me. The nurse explained that they had to make sure that I did not have any tooth infections, because infection of any kind would attack the surgery site. So, I agreed to make a dental appointment. It is Friday, December 3rd. I HATE going to the dentist. They always find something to drill and fill. Yuck!
Then she informed me that I have a 2:15 pm appointment with Julie on Thursday, December 2nd for the pre-testing and then a 3:00 pm with Heather so that Heather can explain in detail what the surgery will entail.
They also told me that I have an appointment on Monday, December 6th with the plastic surgeon to find out if there will be healing problems with the skin on that leg.
I'll have more to report after I make my next appointments.

I had back to back appointments at Orthopedic Institute.
At 2:15 pm, I spent time with Nurse Jan going over my medical history in detail.
She took my blood pressure, monitored my pulse and listened to my heart and lungs through her stethoscope.
At 3:00 pm, I talked to Nurse Heather about the knee prosthesis and all of the complications that could arise during and after surgery. There was a list of thirteen items. I won’t list them.
Nurse Heather described the regional anesthesia that I would be given for my surgery. I have always been given a general, so this was to be quite different. I would be getting an epidural along with a drug that would make me sleep. That way, I would be breathing on my own. There would be no breathing tube. This anesthesia would also reduce the chances of stroke, heart attack and pneumonia. I will also be wearing elastic stockings on both legs and would also have foot pumps on to reduce the chances of getting blood clots.
She told me that I would be using a walker. I vetoed that and we agreed on the use of crutches. We went over the rest of my appointments and I was done.

I had a 2:00 pm appointment to get medical clearance from my dentist.
I was promptly taken into an exam room, where X-rays of my entire mouth were taken. Dr. Jeff came in, grabbed his “tooth-picking” tool and started scratching my teeth with it. I hate that. Of course, he struck a couple of nerves on teeth that were in need of some work. Then, he used a laser tool to measure the density of the teeth and then he ordered X-rays of my upper canine and upper back molar.
He returned and informed me that both teeth would either need root canals or extractions. I said that he could pull them. He decided that he would do it right then and there!
So, he grabbed the syringe of Lidocaine from Nurse Sheila and pumped me so full that my right nostril was completely numb. But when he went to pull the molar, I could feel the “spade”, so he gave me a couple more shots.
When he stood up, I thought that he had only pulled one of the two and asked him if he intended to pull the other one and he said that he already had! They stitched me up, gave me a prescription for pain medication and told me to come back next Friday to have the stitches removed. Yippee!
I also have teeth on the left side that will have to be scheduled for fillings. They will wait until long after I have my knee surgery.
I absolutely HATE going to the dentist.

Met with the plastic surgeon today at 9:30 am.
Noooo; I'm not having an extreme makeover to go with the foot pumps.
The purpose of the visit is to determine if the skin on the right knee will heal properly and to map the area where the knee would be incised.
After filling out my medical history for the umpteenth time, I was taken to an exam room, where I removed my slacks for the examination.
The doctor and his lovely assistant came in. Both appeared to be very young. Hmmm; I wonder...
The doctor decided that the best location to incise for the best post-surgery results would be to go directly over an existing surgical scar on the anterior aspect of the right knee.
He also described hyperbaric therapy should healing become a problem. If that doesn't work, they would consider taking the leg above the knee.
He was to contact my orthopedic surgeon with his findings.
Green light for December 20th so far.

I third this motion. Though I'ld recommend Lutheran General before Rush North Shore-aka "death valley", it was a long time ago; when it was still called Skokie Valley. Also at Lutheran you get a cute little fuzzy stuffed teddy bear for your first visit!

Just wondering if you've looked into the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute. There is a doctor there that only does is knees, Dr. Raab. The number is (847)375-3000. Also Dr. Supero an Orthopedic Surgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, who's a teaching professor at Nothwestern University and has his own private practice. I was just wondering how we went from knee replacements to septic tanks but I figured it out. Knee replacements run a risk of infection. Septic tanks thrive on bacteria Bacteria can cause infections. Therefore, if you're having your knees replaced, stay away from septic tanks.

Went to the hospital again for joint class and pre-testing. Today was a day of screw ups.
Orders from the doctor’s office never made it over to the hospital. They questioned the lack of pre-testing, so I called the doctor’s office on my cell phone and spoke to the nurse there. I explained that I was at the hospital and that the only thing that had been done in preparation for my surgery was a blood draw last Wednesday. She was beside herself and said that she would fax over orders for more tests “right away”.
Forty-five minutes later, the orders still hadn’t arrived, so I went on to my joint class, where a physical therapist spoke, we watched a movie about the surgery and recovery, asked questions and then the dietician spoke of the need for good diet after the surgery.
As I looked around the room, I noticed that I was the youngest one there. Everyone else was in their 70s.
After the class, I was taken back down to pre-test, where I was given an EKG and a chest X-ray. I also had to produce a urine sample. As the nurse was completing the paperwork, she noticed that I was missing some tests of my blood, so she had to draw more blood from me.
After I was done at the hospital, I went to my surgeon’s office to drop off certification papers. I only hope that they aren’t misplaced.
Today didn’t go so smoothly. I hope the day of surgery is better organized. We’ll see.

Would that make Jack the Doctor of Poop?

Is that a motion, CR?

If it is, I'll second it if we can change the title to "Doctor of Poopology."

This will result in less confusion, and lessen the chances of somebody mistakenly calling him, "Dr. Poop." We wouldn't want that.

On a serious note, it sounds like you are having a typical time. Let's hope they get it straightened out. All doctors are quacks. IMHO.

Usually, the first day after surgery is the worst. I know a computer was the last thing on my mind the next day. Back when I had mine done at UW Madison, my insurance company would only allow a 2 day stay. I had surgery on Wed and was back home on Friday---way too soon. That 80 minute ride home was almost unbearable.

Medications? Only take the Protonix and Timolol the morning of surgery with just a sip of water.
Allergies? Latex or rubber? Nope. Foods? Yeah; hospital food. Demerol and Soma compounds. Don't take aspirin or ibuprophen. Tylenol is OK.
How many surgeries were arthroscopy?
No alcohol within 24 hours of the surgery.
No smoking 12 hours before surgery.
Nothing by mouth after midnight.
Any questions? Yeah; what time Monday?
They'll call me tomorrow.

Kim and I left home at 7:00 am with me driving. We stopped in Knoxville, so she could have one of those scrumptious bacon, egg and cheese biscuits from Hardee's.
We arrived at the Surgicare Unit at 8:10 am., got checked in, and then was taken back to a pre-surgery suite, where I was instructed to take everything off and to get into the surgery gown. A nurse came in and was going to draw blood and install the IV catheter in my left hand and I told her that I had never had any luck on the left arm. She tried TWICE before giving up and putting it in my right on the very first try!
Dr. Driessnack, the surgeon, came in about 9:30am and told me that it would be eleven o'clock. He was going to sneak in an arthroscopy before me.
At 10:45 am, they wheeled me over to surgery, was getting it ready for me, and the anethesiologist came over and told me about the epidural/Fentanol combo that I would be getting. They sat me up on the gurnee and she rubbed my lower back with something very cold and abrasive. That was the last thing I remember until I was back in my room. My wife, Kim, son, Dustin, his fiancee, Amanda and my sister, Joyce were all there to greet me. That was at 5 o'clock pm. I spent a lot of time in the recovery room because they were trying to get the pain under control. Surgery lasted 2-1/2hours.
They had foot pumps on my feet, a perpetual motion machine on the right leg, tubes installed into my right leg to pump saline through it and pump it out, and I was on morphine drip. I was punching the button to deliver me my pain nectar like a hummingbird flapping its wings! Ouchee!
More later.

:( It doesn't always turn out so rosy. Talking to dad yesterday morning and apparently my "ex-auntie" was in Germany to get both her knees done. Surgery went well, but it was in recovery that things went downhill, liver shut down and she almost lost her life. Something to do with the pain killers I think.

My youngest cousin, Julie, talked to her mom's doctor in Vancouver and then flew over yesterday. She wants her mom to be flown home but I don't think Julie understands that even on a medi-flight her mom won't be able to be moved anytime soon, for weeks even. Probably get just as good care there than here. Maybe better, considering all the horror stories in the news about some of BC's hospitals lately.

The left one is full of arthritis, so I have the problems associated with that, but I will put off having that one done until I can't tolerate it any longer.
When I sit, I can get almost 90 degrees bend in the new knee.
When I lay on my stomach and raise the leg, I can only get about 45 degrees.

How ironic.
I did a search and Josh was the last one to post anything on my RIGHT knee.
Well, in less than 24 hours, I will be getting a new, proesthetic LEFT knee.
December 20 last year; December 19 this year. Trust me; it's not because I enjoyed the last time so much. I have been on a steady diet of Darvon for the past two months. I can't imagine going pain free and painkiller free. It will be most welcomed.
Not looking for sympathy; well, maybe a little, but I wanted you all to know that if I'm quiet for a few days, it is because I don't have a computer in the hospital. I might be able to sneak out to the nurse's station and use their's!
I can't wait. I probably won't sleep tonight. I have to be there to register by 5:30 am tomorrow morning.
I will be thinking of all of you. I also posted something on the flatlander page at IACOJ.
And at 8:00 am tomorrow morning, can you say a little something for me? They won't let me wear St. Florian into surgery and the saint is always around my neck. My wife has been instructed to get him back on me as soon as she sees me after surgery. I feel creepy not wearing it. I will also have Harley bear in the room with me.
