I am in Iraq right now and this is a good place to get your foot in the door of Contract fire fighting. There are many places overseas that use Contract firefighting, most of these can be found by a simble web search.

Hey,
I just got hired by wackenhut, as a contract firefighter and will be sent to Iraq if everything goes well. I was curious as to what it was like over there I jus dont want to go in with a blank mind. Also what is the pay scale diff between KBR Halliburton and Wackenhut. And does anyone have any comments for someone new going over?
Thanks

Hot in summer. Lots of rocket attacks. Pay scales are very close to the same. Wackenhut has a better benefits package..... Just be prepared for war like situations.

I am in Iraq right now. If you're looking for a "Fire Department" job this isn't the place to come. But if you're looking for some extra money, this might be the place for you.
There isn't a call volume since we don't run calls. I've been here for nearly 10 months and have had only two, yes 2, fires at my base.

All,
For those of you who are looking to work the overseas contract, here is some information.
First, if you wish to work in Iraq, living conditions are not the best at some locations. If you have been promised the apartments in Kuwait, think again. You may be assigned to some FOB location which means living in tents. You call volume in some locations will be minimal at best. The Green Zone may be the busiest of locations. The prime contract for Iraq is KBR, but Wackenhut is the subcontractor and will be your best choice for getting your foot in the door. Keep in mind, these are military contracts and you have to meet the minimum certification requirements, i.e., FF, you must have IFSAC or Pro-Board FF1 & II, HazMat OPs, Airport FF (depending on flying mission) and First Aid/CPR. Certifications from the mom and pop shop will not qualify. Additionally, you must have a minimum of 3 years full-time experience.
Afghanistan is a better location to work. There is higher call volume at both Bagram and Kandahar. Kandahar is rapidly expanding department especially with its airfield mission. Stay way from recruiters that promise you K2, Uzbekistan, this base is closing and you may be there on temporary status and not relocated. The prime contract for Afghanistan is KBR. The living conditions, vehicles and equipment are above par. There is a permanent fire station at Kandahar with a second under construction. Keep in mind, to go to Afghanistan, you must meet the DOD certification requirements, there are no exceptions.
For the middle east, there is Qatar and Saudi Arabia. ITT Systems handles the Qatar contract and Vinnell handles Saudi Arabia. Qatar is coming up for bid on its contract in the next year. Both locations are very good, with Qatar being the best of the two. Again, keep in mind, the certification requirements.
For those looking for a little South America action, DynCorp LLC (CSC) handles the Manta, Ecuador contract. It is a nice contract, but the pay is not as substantial as the middle east.
For the south pacific, Chugach runs the Kwajalein Atoll contract. This is a nice contract as well, but the pay is not as high.
All in all, working contract fire protection is one of the greatest choices I have ever made. Yes, it is a far cry from the big city response loads, but, for career inverstment, travel opportunities, and cultural experience, I highly recommend it. Keep in mind, not all contracts are the same. Some are better than others. Most starting positions, will offer the same pay and is non-negotiable. When you start to advance to the chief officer positions, then you can negotiate for salary, family status and the like.
I hope this helps. If you need actual websites or contact information, please let me know.

All,
I read through a couple of other forums and found there are questions on converting certification to the DoD Certification. Here is some insight for contract FF that will be of help.
First, you must have either IFSAC of Pro-Board certifications with actual serial numbers. When talking to the recruiters, you must indicate these are non DoD certifications, but are IFSAC/ProBoard issued. You can be hired with these certs.
You cannot, I repeat cannot convert your certification to DoD, unless you are working for the DoD under contract or for the military. Hence, you must be hired first.
Once you arrive at your assignment location, you need to get in contact with your A/C of Training or Fire Chief. They will need to write a letter to AFCESA, to request your certification conversion. You will need copies of your certifications that you wish to have transferred. AFCESA will review your certifications and then provide you with a DoD Certification equivalent. Please make sure that your certifications are true. I have had to terminate several personnel for falsefying certifications. There are ways to check, and believe me, AFCESA will check the validity.
Here is the catch, if you have certifications for HazMat Awareness/Ops/Tech, you cannot convert these certifications. You must actually take the coursework from the DoD program again. Yes, again. These are simple courses and are computer generated. You ask, if these certifications cannot be converted, how can I be hired. Simple, you fire chief, can coordinate with the Contracting Officer to allow for a time variance for you to take the course while at your work site. Depending on the relationship between the fire chief and the ACO. You can complete the awareness and ops in about a month and half, depending on how driven your training officer is.
Hope this helps.

All,
After extensive research, there are two major worldwide contracts up for bid right now. AFCAP III is an Air Force contract as is nearing the award schedule hopefully in the next two weeks. Fire protection will be a requirement with the exception that it will be for projects outside of the U.S.
The next one on the books is LOGCAP IV. This is mother of all contracts. It appears that it will not happen until about 2007. This contract is being broken down to several different world regions with a maximum of 3 prime vendors to run the contract. LOGCAP IV will be an Army contract, but they may be incorporating AFCAP into the picture.
More to come..

I am looking to leave my current fire job and go into contract fire fighting and try it out. The only website's I can get to and actually see where they do hire firefighters is wakenhut. Are there anymore website's I can go to and apply. I have tried searching for others but the main result is wakenhut. I just want to make sure I find the best company to go with along with the pay before I make a commitment.

Hey Galebagram2u did you used to work in Manta? I think i might know you.
Yes, I used to work in Manta.. Something like, Fire Chief (only on the sober days) Now I am in Saudi on my way over to Iraq or Afghanistan. I got the green light from wife, who is now wearing the pants in the family.. Only catch is that I have to wait until January to leave. Which is o.k., that will ensure my EOS bonus to come through...
So who might you be??????

Chief,
It’s so nice to hear from you, even though you probably won’t remember me, I was a volunteer firefighter in the city of Manta. I was the translator the night that Plasti Lopez burned down. But after a long night at Cadillac’s, I’m even surer you won’t remember me LOL, I used to hang out with Bareis. I now work with WSI HQs in Baghdad, please send me an email, I would like to ask you some questions, and maybe if you don’t remember me I’ll describe my self a little better . Take care,

Christian,
You are right I do not remember you... Manta was a major blur, not just for me, but I think for everyone else that was there.. Now had you said Baja Beach, I would be more inclined to remember.. Let me ask this, were you ever at any pool parties at my house..

Yes Manta was a hoot and saving money was a difficult one. That place was my one year party to me.. But it was worth it.. I am still with my current wife and boy did I have to pay for that one..
Sorry to hear the HCN's are going through hell there.. I tried to set up a really nice program before I left, but I cannot speak on what the current management does... I hope it gets worked out on the next contract as I do not think DynCorp will get it... speculation only...

The Fire Chief contract was terminated since the Project Manager didnt like his hard on approach and willing to make it better for the client the Air Force. Our Chief came to Spain experience a lot of complicated issues and was very succesfull in pushing the mission forward. He was left with a mess from the previous contractor PAE, equipment that is over thirty years, except the Fire Trucks.
If you are planning to apply for the Fire Chief job this is what you should expect.
First get ready to be run over by two sindical groups, the company PM is very quick to fire any US personnel, however is always providing assurance to the union that no union empoloyee will ever get fired. You never know how many employees are going to show up to work on any given day, is a real nightmare for the Station Captain. You are going to be promised the world and when you arrive to the site, the true story comes out. Most of your firefighters doesnt speak english, refused to do any upgrade training unless they get additional pay. If you are coming as a firefighter make sure that your contract is very specific on the work hours. Otherwhise the Company will screw you by telling you that you are a salary employee and you get paid no mattter how many hours you work for. Make sure that if you are bringing your family, you study the cost of living in Spain.
If you like to party this is the place to come since the Project Manager doesnt enforce the alcohol policy, he doesnt care when one of the Assistant Chief's well known for his alcohol abuse shows up to work intoxicated. Tthis guy was fired from every other project that he ever worked in the past. He was a firefighter in 2004 and two years later he is occupying the Assistanht Chief role, he doesnt have any experience, lacks certification requirements or necesaary knowledge required for his position. Is probably the reason why the Fire Chief employment contract was terminated early. The Fire Chief refused to accept that type of behavior and requested numerous times to get him terminated however the PM will not support his request.
The Deputy Chief doesn't have any experience dealing with any Air Force mission or requirements. He only knows how to get over the Fire Chief by going to the Project Manager behind the Fire Chief back. He doesnt recieve any respect from any of the shift workers because is well known his intention to back door the Chief.
Your attitude here will suffer changes since anybody that comes in with good intention and wants to imkprove the mission will get a large bag of dissastifaction.
I think this is a good place to work if the company start listening to the managers that are running the section.
Hope this brief will hep you make a right decision...Good Luck

My name is Mark Condrich, and I am a firefighter with the Cleveland Fire Dept. in Ohio. My partner and I started three websites dedicated to our men and women in firefighting, law enforcement and the military. You can visit our parent site at WWW.FOOTYSITES.COM
From there you can access FOOTYFD.COM featuring full length, uncut fireground footage, FOOTYPD.COM featuring full length unedited police video and FOOTYGI loaded with uncut footage submitted by our troops.
Our mission is to make our men and women in uniform LOOK GOOD! We screen all videos uploaded to the site to assure that it contains only positive content. We want the public to see how incredibly difficult it is for our personnel as they do their jobs. By watching us in action, they will hopefully appreciate the great job our public servants do on a daily basis. I encourage you to visit our three sites and upload any videos or pictures that you believe would help us to convey the positive image we are trying to portray. Thanks so much, and stay safe!

I'm not a firefighter, but, I'm kinda worried about my dad. He went over to Iraq for the overseas contracting thing recently, and I dont hear from him often, which really worries me. Is he set up on a base where he's safe from any terrorist activity? What is the likelyhood of him getting hurt or killed over there right now? Have there been any other overseas contractors that have been killed in the line of duty over in Iraq? Please let me know.. my email is tlandsx@yahoo.com. I'm not a regular subscriber to this forum so I might not see a reply from you. So, if someone could email me giving me the details, that would put my fears to rest.
Thank you
T Lands
PS. If anyone over there in Iraq knows of a firefighter by the name of Robert Lands, please tell him his daughter misses and loves him.

Hello everyone and let me pay you my respects to each and every one of you guys!
I'm currently working as a full time Firefighter here in the U.K and have done so for the past 7 years, before that I was a Military Firefighter for 3 years providing cover on an R.A.F Air base.
Hopefully you guys will be able to help me out as I have hit a brick wall trying to research any Firefighting jobs open to a U.K citizen.
I am a single lad who really needs a new challenge and really I'll be open to any possibilities.
I'm looking for some vacancies which will enable me to travel and reward me financially : )
Thanks for any help with this.......Peace out
