View Full Version : Last night I met a HERO (more than one)

Last night we were toned out to a two vehicle MVA with possible fire. When our chief arrived on scene he radioed to the rest of us that both vehicles were fully involved. As we pulled on scene we were met with two vehicles, fully engulfed in flames. The heroes that I am referring to are not one of us, they are the bystanders who risked their own lives and safety to pull out the victims of the accident, I firmly believe that had they not been so brave the occupants of the one vehicle would not have made it. These men and women who lent themselves to the rescue broke windows with whatever was available (the guys found a large rock in the one vehicle) so that they could obtain access to the people inside. In total two adults and two children were pulled from the one vehicle. One "hero" was sent to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, and two others suffered burns to their hands. My lid is off to these selfless individuals who risked life and limb to come to the aid of fellow human beings. Some may view their actions as stupid or reckless, I view them as heroic for without their bravery the outcome of this incident would have been far different.

We had a similar incident here a week or so ago involving a tanker truck. A passing motorist pulled the driver out of his burning 18-Wheeler that was up sideways on a jersey barrier. I made a post about it as well....

I wonder if cupcake will again enlighten us on how the people who rescued those trapped occupants shouldn't have gotten involved and let the "real firemen" handle it after they had burned to death.

Coudos to the average guy/gal that steps to the plate in a crisis. When are we going to start recognizing them in the debriefings? Even if a formal CISD isn't held, the chatter at the firehouse goes a long way for helping the new guy.

Go civillians, indeed a hero.

It is said that we are at our bravest when we sign up to be a FF and are heroes who dont recognize the term. Them being civillians and this not being in their job descrip., it def. is a noble deed in my mind.
