It just so happens that I was driving home last night (Wednesday night/Thursday morning) from visiting my good friends at Mill Bay VFD. Myself and my sister left Mill Bay's hall at 2:30 and had just crested over the top of the hill (Malahat) not to far from the official summit lookout. Sarah (my sister) just finished commenting on how bright and full moon was. I was looking to the left over my shoulder towards it (the moon) when what do I see??? A fairly large white streak running through the sky. Not even milli-seconds later the entire roadway lights up around the car in a brilliant white light that made the area look as if it was 2:40 in the afternoon, not 2:40 in the morning (it was so bright, the shadows given off from the trees was overlapping my high-beams). Taking my foot off the gas pedal I looked over my shoulder again I seen the white streak change to red, then disappear.

It was probably one of the most incredible things I have ever seen! My first thought was that someone had fired a distress flare in the inlet; but that didn't account for the brilliant white light that illuminated EVERYTHING (I guess I would compare that to something similar to WWI or WWII "star burst" lighting up a battlefield).

I heard on the radio this morning that were reports from as far away as Idaho telling of a bright white light across the night sky. Was anyone else out and about at approx. 2:40 AM-PST???

On another note, lets say something like this actually impacted the ground, what do you suppose dispatch would tone us to?? and who would we call to report it (because I am sure that there is some agency being funded somewhere that would want to come out and have a look)??

What you saw is reffered to around here as a SEP.

It was a meteor, thats what the news says, they had video of it from a walmart security camera, they said around 2:40 am.

Man, I knew NASA was having hard times, but I had no clue it was so bad that they're having to contract with Wal-Mart for stuff like this...

Maybe we shouldn't question the fact that NASA didn't get a picture of it, and should be questioning why Walmart's has camera's pointed towards space???

Ok, ok... so I didn't to much feed back on this. HOWEVER, Yesterday's newspaper (Monday, June 14, 2004) had an article about the exact same thing happening, though, the meteor actually went through the roof of a house and hit the living room sofa. I think it was somewhere in Australia, I am not sure... I will get the article posted this evening when I get home.

What do you think was going through everyone's mind when the tones for that one came in??

On another note, does anyone else remember that scene at the start of Armageddon where New York gets pelted with meteors?? And they claim that the smaller meteors are a result of the larger one knocking them out of orbit and sending them towards Earth???

I don't want to sound like a dooms-day-ist, that is two in the last few weeks (that we know of)...

Does anyone have any info on how many times per year these things happen?? I am sure it is more often then we hear about (though, both of these two events seem to be more than "average")
