I spent a fair amount of time about 2 yrs ago trying to get manufacturer information regarding this topic, from Ford, GM, Mercedes and Chrysler, to no avial. Ron Moore was the only one who was able to provide any information, and that was related to Honda and Toyota.

Rescue Workers Say Hybrid Cars a Danger

By PATRICK WALTERS Associated Press Writer

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The growing popularity of hybrid vehicles is a step toward cleaner air and less dependence on gasoline. But for rescuers at accident scenes, they represent a potential new danger: a network of high-voltage circuitry that may require some precise cutting to save a trapped victim.

"You don't want to go crushing anything with hydraulic tools," said Samuel Caroluzzi, an assistant chief with the Norristown Fire Department outside Philadelphia. "It's enough to kill you from what they're telling us in training."

Hybrids draw power from two sources, typically a gas or diesel engine combined with an electric motor. The battery powering the electric motor carries as much as 500 volts, more than 40 times the strength of a standard battery.

That worries those who must cut into cars to rescue people inside.

"If you can't shut it down, you don't know where the high voltage is," said David Dalrymple, an emergency medical technician in New Brunswick, N.J.

This give a whole new meaning to "rip 'n strip".

New techonology to get used to.

No horse ever leaked flammable liquids, so automobiles where quite the contraption to get used to at first!

Wonder if they could build in explosive disconnects to severe the high-voltage battery cables if the airbags deploy. Wouldn't protect against something piercing the battery and energizing the car that way, but it would de-energize in the vast majority of situations.

BTW, the Ford Escape hybrid is coming with a built-in inverter, so you'll have 1500(?) watts of 110v AC available in the car to run a microwave, frig, etc :)

Pontiac Vibe already has an inverter.

I sit here shaking my head. All I can think is: What will they think of next to install? An inverter is something that I have come to expect in say a very large motorhome, and certainly in a commercial long hauler, but IN A CAR????

I don't know about the others but the Toyota Prius does have relays, in the high voltage system, to disconnect the high voltage power when the air bags deploy. Toyota has also put out a great ERG(Emergency Response Guide)for there Prius, a must see.

Ron Moore sent me a copy of the Prius and the Insite safety information, and EFFD131, you are correct, and absolute MUST SEE for anyone doing extrication.

I reprinted 10 new booklets for the new guys in our dept about 2 wks ago. But am always on the look out for more.
