Hey. I am in Kent Volunteer Fire Department in Kent, CT. We are a small town in Northwestern CT. I am a Fire Explorer and soon to be an EMT-B. Our department is redoing our Explorer unit and hopefully being Juniors. I am trying to find out as much informationg as possible on different Department with Juniors/Explorers who are the small town setting and how they handle their youths. If you feel you have a good stable group and everyone seems happy with how it all is run I would greatly appricate any information you would be able to give me. Bylaws, SOPs, and any other sort of information. You can email me at purcell17@juno.com or post a reply to this.

THANK YOU!

-Billy

We spent a lot of time redoing our junior program. One thing to remember is that the dept of labor has strict guidlines for minors. Firefighting is considered a hazourdous job, hence minor firefighters cannot participate in firefighting or in areas that scba is needed.
It is also important that strict rules/sop/sog etc be in place to run the program. Remeber if something happens to a minor...it is the chief butt and he or she could face crimminal charges.
Some things to consider are a curfew, they must be out of the firehouse by 9:30 p.m. on a school nite, 11 p.m. on a non school nite. Cannot respond after those times. No lights or pov FD identification on pov's. No key to firehouse, different set of gear then regular ff gear. No ladder climing.I'll email you my file that I have... Thing is your hands are tied with minor firefighters. Oh by the way, the term minor firefighter cannot be used, we changed them to cadets.

In my town we have a great program running since 1981. We have many guidlines. No lights of any kind on POV's, no smoking, drinking on fire depart. property, only use the gear your issued, cadets are first to get bumped off trucks, no POV's on the scene. We are not allowed to be at the FD w/o a firefighter present. We are allowed to respond to all calls whenever and what ever they are. We are also allowed to climb ladders etc.To leave school you must have your own car, and a B average, and sign in upon return. We also have strict attendence policies and if we get a 2 week suspension more then twice we are terminated. These are just some of the many......
