View Full Version : Emergency lights in personal vehicles

I'm curious to know how many states allow firefighters to have emergency lights in their personal vehicle? Also how many firefighters from Minnesota think we should be able to get them?

Thank you for your opinion smokeeater, I'll take it under advisement.......... oh wait a minute, your opinion means Jack to me.
Oh and as for the "actual firefighter" bit, nah, you busted me, I just play one on tv. Thanks for outing me though, I've been such a tortured soul over that, not sure how to tell my friends or my family. Thanks for showing me the way.

Someone, please, kill this thread now before it turns into another...

Oh forget it:rolleyes:

Smokeeater, just calm down a little. This is a topic that has been beat to death, resurrected, and then beat some more. I can understand why you would want to ask, but those of us who have been here for a while can get tired of the same questions over and over. Before posting on a topic that might even seem to be controversial in the slightest sense of the word (or a fairly common topic), take a few minutes to quickly browse some older threads to see if your question has been previously answered. Hope this helps...

And BTW... they are allowed in SC

Smokeeater,

These forums are real heavy on sarcasm. You have just stumbled into a topic that always degenerates into chaos. Opinions on the subject of POV lights vary greatly and are hotly contested. Sorry you wandered into all of this unaware, but it's not personal until you make it so. (ie: calling someone an ass) Just a "heads up" -46

Bottom line, If your local sherriffs department says it is legal, it is legal, if it is not, its illegal. Around here the sherrif says who can have lights and who cant. And why did you go and get this thread started, now the explorers are gona go off about blue lights and all. I dont see any need for fire fighters / emergency responders to have lights in their pov unless they are a chief, BC, Asst chief and so forth. Because who is gona cover your posterior region when you are runnin hot in your pov and you hit something or someone. That is why we have fire trucks, ambulances and police cars. They are for running code to a call, not a pov. The only lights that someone should have are his hazzard flashers which are included in the car and other amber lights to be used on the side of the road only, or while stopped. Even our volunteer ff's out in the boonies cant have lights.

Type "lights" or "POV" in the search box, and Weruj1 is 100% correct when he says thats because it has been dicussed 900000000000000000000000 times new boy !

I my self am getting sick of this topic. Just check your state laws. No one in there can change those laws.

Oh and what bothers me is people that deck out their povs and go thundering down the road like maniacs. And why are you runnin hot in a POV, when your POV has no tools or equip. Just like showing up to a fire and going " we got no water"

stm4710

Did they teach you anything in Joco expvol? If your local sherriffs department says it is legal, it is legal, if it is not, its illegal. Sheriffs or police do not "make" laws....... they enforce them, it is up to the state, town and department to decide. And why did you go and get this thread started, now the explorers are gona go off about blue lights and. Bullhorns and "ediots"?
Because who is gona cover your posterior region when you are runnin hot in your pov and you hit something or someone. Coast Gaurd?:p

you sure like to drag other crap into a thread. Well they taught me that if you run in your pov with lights, the chief will have his boot up your posterior very fast and you will not work in the state of kansas for a long time.

For the vollys that I know, they can respond in pov's but without emer lights, safety reasons. And your right the sherrifs dept doesnt make the laws, but if they enforce them, dont you think that they will know what is illegal and legal. Plus they are the people that you have to go to, to get your vech licenses if you want lights.

Bet this is one that will vary from state to state............. In Maryland, you can find a speed limit that drops from 55 to 25 instantly, as the road crosses a town line. A good portion of the town revenue is from speeding tickets......

WTFD....
Man, that's a great idea. I think that the webteam should definately take a long, hard look at it. On the lighter side, could you imagine the threads now (cue dream sequence music):

Lights on POVs
Red vs Blue Lights on POVs
Green Lights on POVs (for NY & Canadian interested parties)
More on Lights on POVs
What kind of lights do you have on your POV?
What kind of car/truck/scooter do you have your lights on?
Does your Ford Pinto spin when the WhackerBar 5000 is engaged?
Wig-wags or hide-a-way strobes?
Sirens or no Sirens?
Why do Fire Police Lts/Capts have Reds/Sirens when FFs don't? (PA special topic)

Don't even get me started on the subtopics for these ones:

Fog vs. Smoothbore
Ladder vs. Tower
Career vs. Volly (or Volly vs. Career)
Professional? I thought we were all professionals?

And Finally,
QUINTS...Love 'em or Hate 'em.
-->Moderated by PAVolunteer (Sorry dude!!) :)
(End dream music sequence)

What do ya think?

SERIOUSLY THOUGH-- It's a really good idea. I'm going to PM the webteam about it.

Upon reflection I can see Mike's point here. He's right, we all bitch about certain things, yet sometimes we are guilty of the very thing we complain about. Maybe we do need to be more tolerant of those who may post things that we don't necessarily understand or agree with. I'm a big supporter of respecting other's opinions, and their right to voice them. I'm a very strongly opinionated individual and don't usually have a problem expressing it. He's also right with the idea of being a bit more patient with new users, we all know what's been discussed to death, new users don't. Yet I also know that even when it's gently pointed out it's not taken well.

When I first posted on this thread, I made my post very much tongue in cheek. I forgot that not all members here are familiar with my sense of humor, I thought the humor was easily seen within that post. When I posted the "explanation" it was because I realized at that point that some may think that I was being serious. The rolling of the eyes, well, that's just me, I roll my eyes all the time ;). I am a big enough person to apoloogize to the originator of this thread, since my sarcastic post seems to have caused this to go somewhat sideways. It was meant in good humor, was meant to cause a laugh because I could see where this was going to go, but it backfired. I still dont' think that my posting something with sarcastic humor and a subsequent explanation of said post warranted an attack upon my person, but what the heck. I'm a big GIRL, and if someone wants to call me a name that's fine. From now on, a whole lot more thought will be going on before I post anything, I will try to see what I want to say from all angles so this hopefully doesn't happen again. Just a little FYI, most things that I post are done so with humor and perhaps a little too much sarcastic wit behind them.

Anyway, to answer the original question, no lights here, the Chief is allowed I believe; but no other members. I'm not certain as I've never seen anyone utilize this.

Well another post that has gone all every which of way of opinions from leather helmets, boots, color of light, etc.

LOL at all the responses.

In Virginia, maybe like other states members of a organized fire department or rescue squad can have red warning lights affixed to their privately own vehicle (pov). If must have a permit to do so signed by the Chief or President whoever of the department you are running with.

Blue lights can be used only by law enforcement in Virginia.

This is the law of the Commonwealth and the State Police is the agency that writes the rules and submit them to the General Assembly to be approved.

The State Police also controls the vehicle inspection for all vehicles that are registered in the State. If the state inspector finds any type of light that does not meet the standards set forth, then the inspection of the vehicle is either rejected or the lights or the item(s) that is against the law is removed. This included the tacky blue or other colored lights that some folks have attached underneath the vehicles or around the license plates and inside the interior of the vehicle.

It may be legal to sell these type of lights and stuff in the stores, BUT it is not legal to use them on your car.

Years ago when I was doing the volunteering thing, I did have two red lights in my grille of my vehicle that I use to respond to calls. They were the same as the police use on motorcycles and I attached a flasher to them. I only ran them occasionally. They are still in good shape with only a few miles or light hours on them!!!

I may attach them to my riding lawnmower, just for the heck of it. :-)

Stay Safe & Well out there....

As for railing on a guy who brings up a topic which has already been discussed once, twice, a thousand times ... do you realize how many probies have gone through our firehouse? Do you know how many times I've gone over the same thing over and over and over and over and over again ... just to see probie after probie eventually become disinterested and leave (once they realize it's not all fun and glory ... and is mostly just work)? Do you think I get sick of it? Sure I do ... but when the next probie walks through that door, I'll do the same thing, in the hopes that someday, it will pay off. Why? Because that's what we do ...
