BANGOR, Maine -- Firefighters use a snorkel truck to put water on a stubborn blaze in an historic building. The building, which housed a Masonic lodge and three businesses was reported on fire Thursday night. Sub-zero temperatures and wind chill created ice and snow several feet deep at the base of the building. (01/16/04 AP photo)

Don't let them fool you it is actually foam and they are in Florida. The brother in the bucket doesn't look like the cold is bothering him any.:D

Is that still smoke coming off the front of the building at the roofline. Set the Ice machine up again;)

I'm sure there isn't much run off water at that point. The weight of the ice on the building has to be tremendous. You have to keep collapse in mind when dealing with a fire like this. Even a building without fire damage would rather fall over then hold up all that ice.

Excellent point. Water isn't any lighter when it freezes and at eight pounds a gallon, there's a lot of extra dead load on that building.

Heck I finally stopped wearing exercise shorts under my bunkers last night when we hit -20 with the wind chill. I had to actually put on a pair of pants:eek:

I'm originally from Rochester, NY and have been living in Colorado for the past 2.5 years. I figured once I moved to Colorado, I would have more snow than I could deal with. Right now, (1/30/04 @ 4pm CST) it's about 45 degrees and only remants of snow on the ground from a "storm" we had earlier in the week.

I talked with my dad earlier in the day and he said that NY (just east of Rochester) is STILL getting hammered with snow. I say, "Dad, you're killing me here!!"

Call me crazy, but I loved fighting fires at 3am on a frigid morning, where my moustache would freeze up from my breath and we'd have to chip the supply line out of the iced over road! All wearing those fireball gloves, knee-high boots (suppose to be thigh high, but I'm too darn tall) and those wool-lined, hard rubber coats that froze stiff!

Ahhhh the day.

New years day we had a mail semi start on fire after a bad crash. It was about -5 and the foam was freezing into this nasty slush. Many of us ended up looking like snow men with that foam slush frozen to our turn out gear.

When that picture was taken it was still burning inside, no way to reach the seat of the fire. The "Snow" from the spray reached 7 feet deep! Collapse was a huge concern, the chief ordered the wrecking ball somewhere along the 5th alarm. Once they knocked the building down they went back in with master streams and flooded it some more. As I recall it took somewhere around 3 days to completely exinguish this blaze.

Shorts in 40 degree weather? Hell, the brother in the bucket was wearing shorts! Seriously, I drive an oil delivery truck in Portland ME and this past friday I had my windows down, it was up to 25F! Felt like a heat wave.

Source of the fire was believed to be in the boiler room, not likely they will ever know the cause.
