Anybody out there ever seen anything unexplainable while going to, coming from, or at a call? Something that was so far out of the scope that no one would believe you. Has your department ever been called to something that just did fit the norm in anybody’s book this side of the SiFi channels scripts? Reason for the post is based on something I saw on SiFi the other week. I was flipping channels and stopped on this scene in a firehouse in Somewheresville, PA. These old guys were sitting around talking about being dispatched to a crash and all of a sudden the military shows up and tell them to leave. (probably an experimental aircraft that went down) Anyway that’s about all of it I watched then the other day I got one of my normal magazines and they had a section about UFO and how it was up to fire department and local police to mitigate the scene until someone else got there. I laughed at that. Anyway if you have ever seen anything strange, not just UFO related, send it in. Never had the…….pleasure myself of seeing anything like that but share if you have.

Driving our Ambulance about 3am, returning from the hospital, saw 5-6 Police cars on what looked like a traffic stop. Got closer, saw guns drawn, and we continued on by, Quickly. Later, 2 of the cops that we saw stopped by the station and, when asked, denied the whole thing. Never did find out what happened.

Well then, it’s story time. A few years ago, a lady in my town sold her property but decided to take her house with her. She hired a house moving contractor for the job. She obviously went with the discount company. The company had only one possible route since any other direction would require moving a foot bridge or overhead pole traffic lights. About a quarter mile into the move they get to a 90* turn and the biggest hill in the city. This is when it went bad real quick. The semi wasn’t powerful enough to pull it up such a steep grade so they tried doing it in steps. They would move a foot or two and then throw chalks under the wheels. Finally, something gave and the house slid off the trailer and onto the road. When it slid, one of the support beams hit a 12 y/o kid who was under the truck moving the caulks. The kid was the owner’s son but I’m sure OSHA had a field day. The house finally stopped when the phone company’s truck became one with the garage. At the same time the garbage truck was turning the corner and took out a cop car responding for the rescue. All attempts to move the house failed. We had to wait several hours for the owner to remove the contents of the house before we could demolish it. The boy escaped with minor injuries but the house is history. The city seized the contractor’s equipment until they could pay for the expenses incurred. Some of the equipment is still sitting in the city impound yard today.
I’ll try to post some pictures when I come home for spring break.

I will echo the sentiment that this is in very poor taste. Even if it were said in jest, which I'm trying really hard to believe that it was, it's not funny. There have been debates too numerous and heated to mention regarding alcohol and the Fire Service. The fact that you allude to members of your Department responding while under the influence at any time IS SICKENING. Dark humor is fine, but like everything else there is a time and a place and believe it or not there is even a line not to be crossed.

What's happened in the past 12 months?
Look, drinking in part of the culture. For Instance, a FF is home with the BBQ grill fired up and is working through a 6 pack when the pager goes off for a bad wreck or a working fire. He jumps in his vehicle and responds. They may pick up a truck or respond directly but they will get there and go to work. The FF may perform CPR on a patient. The good news is that the patient may survive but the bad news is that the patient will blow a .08 in the breathalizer after it's over.<-Now that's a joke.
It happens. Others have tried to change it and run into a brick wall.
The topic of the post was strange things we have seen. I posted my reply. If you don't have anything to post on that topic then please move on to the next thread.

Cellblock... it's no joke!
Drinking is not part of the culture! You want to fire up the BBQ and have a few cold ones...fine and dandy. Shut the pager off and wait at least 8 hours after your last brewski before even thinking about responding.
Anyone who reponds after drinking places everyone on the call and the public in harms way. If theres a line of duty death and the deceased has illegal drugs or alcohol in their system...they do not get the LODD benefits from the PSOB.

Funny how you get angry because he mentions beer at firehouse as a joke yet no one bashes the other threads (including a current one) about beer. Instead the posters just sing songs of praise to beer. If beer and firehouses don't mix, then should beer and fire department-oriented web sites?

What happened in the last twelve months? Let's start with Andee Huber. Unfortunately, she was not the only one lost because someone "got into the grapes." You can read the LODD notices yourself for more information.
I know this dead horse has been flogged mercilessly, but there are those in the fire service who just don't get it and it sticks in my craw.

Drinking is not part of the culture!
Maybe not in your corner of the world but it is common here. I don't condone it. In fact, i was part of a group in my VFD which got drinking banned at the monthly meetings. Three months later the ban was over turned. But we tried.
You want to fire up the BBQ and have a few cold ones...fine and dandy. Shut the pager off and wait at least 8 hours after your last brewski before even thinking about responding.
I agree completely but it just doesn't happen that way here. You ever have a First Responder giving you a patient report and you start getting a beer buzz from him breathing on you? Sad but it happens.
Anyone who reponds after drinking places everyone on the call and the public in harms way.
I agree with that too. It will probably take someone getting killed to stop it from happening here. I just hope I'm not around when it happens.
What happened in the last twelve months? Let's start with Andee Huber.
Let's not. Bad things happen everywhere. If you need to focus on the tragic losses that have occured this year you are free to do so. I predict that bad things will continue to happen regardless of how bad you feel about it. That's the nature of the world we live in.
Now put down that box cutter and step away from the THREAD.

I once saw a FireFighter show up at a call.
He was wearing...
A. Plastic Helmet
B. Rubber Boots
C. Dirty PPE
He was Driving...
A private car with a gazilion candlepower of flashing lights and 300 decibels worth of sirens (and he was SPEEDING).
He had been...
Drinking
He proceeded to...
A. Enter the structure without BA
B. Entered alone.
He was...
A. 16 years old
B. An Officer (it's ok, Daddy is the Chief)
And he ALMOST survived the fire.
but the grilling he got in here was HUGE
now, did I miss any out?????

Bad things weill continue to happen because some of our so called "brothers and sisters" lack common sense and continue to respond under the influence, speed to calls, etc.

Before some of you get into a frenzy over what I posted previously used the term "so called brothers and sisters" because if someone shows up to an incident while under the influence, it's obvious that they don't give a fat rat's rump about their fellow firefighters.!
Imagine getting lost trapped in a burning building and having to activate your PASS. Finding a lost firefighter in a building is hard enough... now put "Bubba SixPack" and the "Walker Brothers" (Blackie and Red)in the role of RIT team members... scary, isn't it?

Call me crazy, but didn't the Webteam say that they would shut down beer threads? I believe this statement from them came after the CDevoe debacle? We beat that trojanhorse to death for several hundred posts.
Webteam; is it my imagination or did you put beer threads on your endangered species list?
Cellblock; I have nothing personal with you, but are you attempting to see just how far your freedom of speech will extend before your posting privileges are reviewed? It's obvious that you are not in here to make friends, but could you make a relevant point or even discuss something without spewing venom? Why do you have to be so angry and then attempt to mask it in "dark humor"?
Come on; your on the couch with the Doctor and the session is free.
What's bothering you? It's just you and me. No one else needs to know.

OK we have had rant, cussing, cursing, name calling, and who knows what else about alcohol and the fire service.... I agree the earlier post here, about a dozen showing up and no one was drunk was in poor taste ( at the very least), but to ban any mention of 'spiritus fermenti' is NO ANSWER. Thats like ignore it and it will go away.....RIGHT! Only by continued discussion, attention, the light being shone into the deep dark corners, can we, however slowly perhaps, get changes made. God Bless Andee and all that have been victims of alcohol in the fire service, but to ignore it, would be a great disservice to their memories. No one wanted Andee or any of the others killed or hurt by what happened, the BEST WAY TO HONOR THEM IS TO REMEMBER THEM AND MAKE THE CHANGES TO PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING TO ANYONE ELSE.
Rant off.

Friends,
I understand that there are a lot of serious problems to talk about,
but I liked the original subject of this thread, so I ask you if is possible to return to "Any Strange, unexplainable things".
Also because if a thing is strange to us, with all the weird events we are dealing with, it mist be really really strange. Or not?
Hu, for now I can't write a valid contribute, but I'm trying to remember...

Well you leave a post alone for a few days and you never know where it will go LOL. Folks I appreciate the post and the good conversation but we got a little off track. Beer and drinking at the fire station would be a good post if it could be discussed in a civil manner but according to one post the web team say "NO TO BEER POSTS".
Anyway back to the post. I was looking for some good lighthearted post about the night you saw flashing lights on the way to a fire call. Any other time that would be normal but this time they were 200' off the ground attached to a disk shapped object LOL. Or the house fire when the interior crew swore they saw something walk into the flames and poof it was gone. Or the night you were at the fire house and one of the old guys stopped by to visit. That wouldn't be strange except he had been dead for 15 years. Or the time when Firefighter Bob got his turnouts roasted to the point nobody could have lived but he didn't have a smut stain much less a burn. Or when his brother Firefighter Bill fell from a three story house roof into a lilac bush with no broken bones.

The strangest thing that I ever saw at a fire, was not one, but two chiefs handling hoseline.
The house was a total loss before we arrived. Flames coming out of the roof (what was left of it) and all four walls. I was handling a 2.5" with my partner, and I saw our chief coming up with an 1.75 to protect an exposure.
About 20 minutes later, the chief from one of the mutual aid departments relieved him.
I don't know how it happened, but it did. It also made me proud of those two chiefs, sometimes they don't like to get their hands dirty.

Back when I worked EMS, we were dispatched for an E-1 response for a fall victim from a ladder. We arrived on scene and were shocked to see the victim soaked in blood from head to toe...as if he had been dropped from an airplane. There was spatter everywhere...yet he was conscious and sitting upright?!?!?!?!? Size up?? He was painting his house red.

The freakiest thing that has happened to me was one night about a year ago. I was in my bunk when I was awakened by someone moving my bed. Next I hear the bunk next to mine, it sounds like someone is sitting on it. The springs are stretching and pinging. I turn the light on and no one is in the room and the door is closed. The next morning I got up and was telling my crew about it. One of the other guys was awakened when he felt someone trying to push him over in his bunk. He turn around and no one was there. Thinking it was his imagination he turned back around to go back to sleep when he felt it again, only this time he was wide awake. Things like this happen around my station often. The first Captain of the house still walkes through the halls.

Something similar here at our Engine 6. The crew says you can feel someone brushing up against you when you are in bed and every other person in the station will be in their beds. Also when I was riding their once I suddenly woke up for no reason and looked at the door, ( I sleep with mine open ) and their was a figure standing there. I got up to see who it was, looked up again and it was gone. The crew says it is one of the old captains that had a MI at work and died in the old station, but the new station is built in the same place as the old one. Also about 00:00 or 01:00 you can hear the doors in the bay open and close and no one will be out there and the doors will be locked.

When I was a volunteer, late at night you could hear the doors of the apparatus being slammed shut. An immediate investigation by the members in station would always find the station empty, with the exception of those there.

My current volly squad was built in the 60's but is extremely active when it comes to the paranormal...We have doors that like to open and close...Noises coming from the basement (our most active area) We even have a few of them caught on film I'll see if I can post it for you guys...We had the South Jersey Ghost Research team come in back in June and they said we have been the most active place they've been to in a long time. Since they came its been alot more comfortable knowing what we are dealing with...scary still but knowing that its nothing bad and just a few old timers who decided to keep an eye on things for a few more years is ok by me....Here is the link to the report the investigators did at our building.http://southjerseyghostresearch.org/cases2/03037.html Dont mind our buildings appearance..that was before we did a little spring cleaning a few weeks later..:D

Some years ago we had four similar arson in the same country area (empty houses) in three months. Near there is an ancient house where people say there are often unexplained noise and cry by night. It is absolutely not usual here, bull****, I think, only joking boys.
One night there was another fire near there in a house. We worked the fire out and stay there a little to check residual problems, with a cop’s team; one of them was once a firefighter. At 2 o’clock in the night (foggy, dark and cold) I saw a blinking light, orange like a fire, at a window of another empty house, 200 meters afar. For three time, then it stopped.
Fearing that an arsonist was putting fire in another house, just in front of us, the cops run there silently and without lights, in the dark. They come back after ten minutes: nobody found, no car, no evidences at all; the doors and low windows of the house were closed, no way to go to the window where I saw the light, because the floor of the room was ruined, broken. Another joke?
Strange, really.

I have been to several fires where a Bible would be sitting on a dresser or desk, and the dresser and everything around would be burnt, but the Bible maybe would only be singed a small bit. It is amazing, also went to a structure fire that started in the kitchen, destroyed the house, but a Bible in the kitchen was still ok, and readable at that...

This is common with all books, not just the Bible. It is rare for even newspapers and magazines, when stacked, to be totally destroyed.

I once went to a structure fire where the guy was trying to burn his porn to clean up the mobile he owned so he could sell it, and the embers blew up under the house and caught it on fire. He also had tons of porno tapes inside the house. The tapes melted into gigantic blocks of plastic with the labels still readable. You could tell exactly what was on the tapes!
