Hey why should the Illinois Boyz have such a great turnout on their Thread??? We have many Firefighters from Ohio here...just no organized voice. And I know that we have alot of issues that have to do specifically with Ohio. We have had a good showing as of late but before that is was really sporatic.
So lets start off by intoducing yourself.
I'll start......

So what Special Procedures if any are people doing since we have this lovely weather lately??? Does anyone have pump heaters or stuff of that nature on their trucks.
Weruj1

The only special procedure we do when we get a significant snowfall is we run a 4 X 4 FD vehicle out to help do a quick shovel job to be safer..........no pump heaters here .........ask 77 about the mini pumper car dealer freeze job ........

If our engines go out and the pump isn't being used (such as at an MVA or an EMS call) the pumps are circulated to keep the water moving.
We also keep the caps off all discharges to prevent them from getting frozen on.
WTFD10
01-16-2004, 12:57 PM
Oh and we never, ever, ever take any of our apparatus to the Ford dealer in "downtown" Oregon. That's a sure way to get a frozen pump! :p

ff7134
01-16-2004, 01:08 PM
Moe,
I never thought about keeping the caps off. I know that we use to keep the discharge drains open. Not any more !!! We just keep the circulation going.
One of our neighbors froze a pump Tuesday on a smoking chimey call. pump full of water but not circualting.

Good Lord, this thread has sprouted!
Well, as for the mini-pumper.......
Insurance does not cover this. Apparently we have some kind of a "no freeze" clause or some crap like that.
Last I heard, the casing was cracked, a valve was cracked and 1 impellar is damaged, along with the 5" stortz adapter off the side. Haven't heard anything else in a few days.

Sheri,
Are you going to be one of those folks with Canadian license plates clogging I-75 while you head south????
A serious question: what are the experiences folks are having with the Division of EMS lately? Good, bad, or indifferent. At least they're not loosing recerts like they did when Linda Ishler was there.
RspctFrmCalgary
01-16-2004, 08:37 PM
No Paul, that'd be ma and pa going south for da winter :D
They head out from Jasper around Thanksgiving (Canadian), usually doing a tour of some sort on their round-about way to Indio (by Palm Springs).
This year they went thru ummmmm I dunno ... east then south then west LMFAO. Ok I looked at the old emails ... first email after leaving Jasper was from Bemidji MN, Bloomington and the Mall of America, Amana Iowa, Hannibal Missouri, Nashville, Pigeon Forge (We have had a good trip so far and just came through the Smoky Mountains where there was still some colour left after a little wind the other night... Did a couple of shows in Pigion Forge, Louise Mandrell one night and a Gosple group called Integrity the next morning........wak'n up to God.....!!! there are more Baptist, Methodist down here than trees in the forest........) , Charleston, Hilton Head, Helloooo...........from Hilton Head, SC. We are playing with the "rich." There is a lot of money in this part of the country........between boats, homes and RV's we are definitely travelling with the big boys......... The restored buildings and Homes are something else to behold. Charleston, Bufort, Savannah are just a few places that one should take a look at. We are off tomorrow to St Agustine, FL and then on to Orlando. Still hope to get to Key West and then start heading back to Indio and our home away from home.
LMFAO @ my dad and his wakin' up to God and playing with the big boys comments, I just had to share their impressions with ya'll!!! They did make it to Key West, then basically just headed west thru Texas and finally to their cement pad at Indio :D Are those the kinda people you mean?? hehehehe

And notice when I joined this forum - why ain't I an old-timer???

Sorry I've only been around long enough to throw a hand grenade into the room and run until now.
I guess I should take the time to properly check in.
- FD member someplace for coming up on 33 years; the first 15 as volunteer, and 18 as career.
- Asst. Chief with my current department. Was Chief at my vollie department, but had to quit when I realized I didn't have the time needed to do the job right. (I hate half-assing a job.)
- Medic since 1977 (it was only 96 hours to get there when I graduated; my program was 600 hours, and that was unheard of in that era)
- State Fire Instructor since 1981,
- Adjunct Faculty at Ohio Fire Academy (not been real busy there for a couple of years due to other projects)
- Faculty of the Technical Studies Department of Ohio University
- Hazmat Specialist
- Hazmat Instructor at Ohio University
- Fire Investigator/Arson Canine Handler
- Big believer in education. I begin the Executive Fire Officer Course at Ohio State this spring quarter.
Ya know, maybe we should find a time for all the "Buckeye Boyz" to get together for real at a central location. There's a pretty nice Irish Pub in Columbus where the Guinness is cold, and the Bushmill's is plentiful. :D :D

Actually the pump was NOT tested. It was too cold yesterday to do it and they were going to do it today because it was going to be warmer, but when we got there to pick it up the guy said they were going to do it this afternoon, but Chief told them not to worry about it since we were already on our way........
Aside from it breaking down on us on the Turnpike in Elyria and some roadside repairs with the Leatherman, it's fixed.........

100% capacity flow at 150 psi for 20 min (that's 1000 gpm if it's a 1000 gpm pump, etc.), 10 min at 70% at 200 psi, 10 min at 50% at 250 psi. That's an in service pump test (well, part of it!) If you want to do an acceptance test, usually done on new vehicles, hold that 150 psi at 100% capacity for 2 hours, and the 70% and 50% tests for 30 min each. You might want to keep a close eye on your temp gauges for this one!!
If you can't trust it to pump this, you can't trust it when lives depend on it!!

Sorry, Ed. Little too complicated pimp testing for me. I was just planning on running it for awhile at various pressure to see if it's leaking and that it's actually working. I leave the serious stuff to the professional who gets paid to do it!:D

How do you guys operate this thing when it is working? Is it your first due rig on structure fires?

It could be during the daytime when it's staffed during the week by our part-timers. More than likely wouldn't be doing too much pumping though on a structure fire, primarily just a car or dumpster fire.
If it ever stays out of the shop long enough to use at a fire.

I didn't think a mini-pumper would be doing much water supplying.
Much as we break your guys' chops about this thing, I sure feel sorry for you. It's gotta suck to get a new rig and have so many problems with it. Hope it gets worked out for you soon.

Check this link out it was featured in the apparatus section of Firehouse in Sept 03.
We actually had it here long enough to take the picture.

Nice looking mini-pumper, sorry to hear your having all these problems. Our neighboring department just put in service a KME pumper, it had mechanical problems at there very first fire with it and its been in the shop for over two weeks now.

Pimp is kinda fitting for the truck. We've been getting pimped over and over again with it.
As 159 said, it could and probably will be 1st due for a structure fire during M-F 800-1700. Don't have an actual policy in place what to do yet. We have enough 5" on it to at least lay the line to the hydrant. Get a quick size-up, have 2 guys packed up with line pulled and waiting for the engine to arrive on scene. The engine can then connect the LDH to the hydrant and depending on size of the fire, either connect it directly to the Mini, or into the engine and the engine can supply the Mini.
Hopefully the higher ups will get everything worked out for us, one way or another........

Im personally not a big fan of mini-pumpers, to limited on what you can do with them, but I guess they have there uses. I just dont like the fact you only have 2 firefighters fighting any type of fire.
firenresq77
02-12-2004, 03:03 AM
Actually, Mini-Pumpers can be very versatile. They can fit into places that a full size engine cannot and still do fire, ems, rescue, etc.
And it's not just 2 people. The paid on call members are still getting toned out for all calls, both EMS and fire.........

My Engine caught fire monday.... :( . But it wasn't a KME related problem. The company that installed the radio put some wires running under a seat that got pinched and grounded out. It fried the radio, burned a big hole in the head liner and burned a hole in the floor. We ended up using a dry chem extinguisher to put it out.

Man that's tough Jeff. Where you guys on a run? Pretty embarrasing when the engine catches fire.
I know of a certain "big city" that had the generator on one of thier engines catch fire while they where at a Courtyard Hotel for a commercial fire alarm.
Hope we never have to deal with something like this but with our "heavy" squad being a converted Ryder truck, we never know what it's electrical system is gonna do next.

I looked at it's apparatus page, and it has a 500 gpm pump. As long as you have a hydrant hooked, certainly enough to run two 1-3/4 lines.

WTFD10,
Yep we were running on a AMA for a Possible Structure fire. A local volunteer called our station to let us know that our lightbar wasn't working. We cycled the switches and went on, we got cancelled and started to head back to the station. About then we noticed that the radio was dead....we hit a bump and it came back on. I thought hey we'll call the Maint. Captain and let him know when we get to the station. We turn the corner to the street that the station is on we notice the smell of smoke in the truck (and its not our gear) .
We all get out of the truck and I look under my seat and I see flames...we do what we do best and take it back to the station. When the antenna wire started heating up it burned a hole in the main bar wiring which caused it to short out (no lights). It melted all the wiring for the radio, the covering on the antenna cable and some wiring to the lightbar.
The radio company already took responsibilty for the fire....we have KME electricians coming in today to check everything out and hopefully I will have my truck back Monday.

Hey, 77 and you other guys with "iffy" pumps - want to check the seals without freezing your fingers off? Do a vacuum test. I do the annual In-Service apparatus pump tests on my department, and one thing we do is check the integrity of the seals and such of the pump. At the same time we check the valves, but you won't have to do that if you just want to check the pump seals.
Drain the pump. (and lets not get into who runs their pump wet or dry in the winter!) <G>
Close and cap all inlets (and outlets since you're not checking them.)
Operate the primer until you've achieved 22 inches of vacuum. Since you're not doing a formal test, ballpark it with the pump panel main gauge.
Shut off the engine, watch the gauge, and listen for hissing (leaking air). To pass the test, it must not drop more than 10 inches of vacuum in 5 minutes. If it does, you got a leaky seal somewhere. But be sure the leak isn't just an improperly closed drain or something.
(If you want to check your outlet valves at the same time, close all valves, remove all caps and hoses from the outlet connections, then do this test. If you have a leaking valve, you can find which one by simply covering each opening in turn with your hand. You'll hear and feel which one is leaking.)

Headache factor is nil for me today. Don't know about all of the others. Some had reserved rooms at the French Quarter. Was a good night and good time had by all.
Congrats to ffsmromstadt13 on getting Firefighter of the Year! This was his 2nd time.
One of our city council members (who used to be a member of the FD) acquired an old hydrant and sandblasted and repainted it. He donated it to us and that is another "award" for the firefighter of the year. He has to take it home and put it in his house somewhere and keep it until next year where it will get passed on to the next one.
