EATONTOWN, N.J. (AP) - The borough's fire chief has been accused
of stealing department equipment and selling it on an Internet
auction site.
Brian McLaughlin, 30, was removed from office last week after
being charged with theft and official misconduct. He also was
suspended without pay from his job as an Eatontown police
dispatcher, a post he has held for 10 years, pending the outcome of
the case.
McLaughlin improperly sold nine pagers and a mobile two-way
emergency radio through the eBay Web site, authorities said. The
investigation began after authorities received an anonymous tip
about the sales, but they would not provide further details.
The pagers were no longer used by the fire department, but the
borough had recently paid $467 for the radio. The equipment was
valued by police at $900, but the amount McLaughlin made by selling
it was not clear.
Authorities said McLaughlin started selling the equipment in
September and intermittently sold the items until his arrest on
Wednesday.
