Collision with fire truck lands man in hospital

Times Colonist Monday, November 17, 2003

A male driver is in hospital after crossing the centre line on West Saanich Road Sunday morning and colliding head on with a fire truck.

Police believe he fell asleep at the wheel.

Both vehicles sustained substantial damage. The lone occupant of the Ford Tempo was taken to Victoria General Hospital with a pelvic fracture and serious facial injuries.

The North Saanich Fire truck was occupied by two senior firefighters involved in a driver training operation, according to RCMP Const. Georgina Josefsson.

After the crash, the firefighters immediately administered first aid to the injured driver. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

Investigators determined the driver of the red Tempo was headed north on West Saanich Road near Bradley Dyne Road when he apparently fell asleep and crossed the double solid line into the oncoming fire truck.

Police are investigating and charges are pending.

Neither speed or alcohol are believed to be factors in the accident.
