HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - The Hattiesburg Civil Service
Commission has upheld the punishment handed firefighter Wayne
Garrigans for insubordination, including paying the city to replace
destroyed gear.
Fire Chief Jim Fiero had placed Garrigans on a two-week unpaid
suspension and forced him to pay the city $646 for the destruction
of protective gear in July.
Garrigans returned to work after serving the suspension,
according to Fiero. Following Monday's commission hearing, Fiero
said he considered the matter closed.
"I think it's time we got back down to doing business," Fiero
said.
Garrigans declined immediate comment.
Rod Black, a member of the Civil Service Commission, said the
board chose to uphold Fiero's decision based on an admission from
Garrigans.
"He admitted it. He destroyed city property and tried to hide
it. He's not authorized to destroy city property," Black said
Monday.
