Now if I heard right FDNYRR son was in this class. All I no is that there will be no more over time for awhile........
There's a bunch of new Bravest.
The Fire Department graduated its largest class ever yesterday, as 346 probationary firefighters were welcomed into a department staggering from retirements and the 9/11 terror attack.
Mayor Bloomberg joined more than 1,000 people at Brooklyn College to cheer on the probies - who outnumber even the complement of firefighters who launched the FDNY in 1865.
"We can never replace those we lost," Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta told the probies. "The next best thing is to recruit and train another generation, and you are very much a part of that generation."
The 343 members of the FDNY killed in the attack on the World Trade Center had 4,400 years of combined experience, Scoppetta noted. The department also has lost years of experience through a wave of retirements.
"I'm sure I'm looking out here at a number of future chiefs," Chief of Department Frank Crothers told the crowd of white-gloved graduates.

Trained at new center

The graduating class is the first to train at the city's new $45 million center on Randalls Island. Its members include five firefighters who lost relatives in the World Trade Center, and others from firefighting families.
"It's following a legacy," said Probationary Firefighter Matthew Regis, 31, whose FDNY roots go back three generations. "It's a lot to uphold."
Probationary Firefighter Craig Thomas, 31, said he was inspired to join after the terror attack. The son of a retired firefighter, Thomas once worked as a stock trader at the World Trade Center.
"It seemed pretty stupid to move piles of money around," he said. "I wanted to do something more with my life."

We will know if he is a Volley. Here is one of the tests.
1-What do you call the end of the hose line ?
2-What do you call the 6’ pole with the pointy thing at the end ?
3-What do you call then things the Firemen ride in ?

We usually keep it simple and just ask the new guys to go get a pike pole. If they get a hook, they're busted.

Don't forget (my personal favorite):
4-What do you wear on your back going into a fire?

A word of caution, though... A lot of the Rockland Vols are pretty big FDNY buffs, so this kid may pass your test. In fact, I'm fairly certain there have been a few guys from the job that taught at the Rockland Fire Academy. I think I remember reading that Andy Fredericks used to be an instructor there.

Not that any of that matters, just start calling the kid "Chief" anyway. :p Guilty until proven innocent...LOL

Yep, Andrew Fredericks (RIP) was an instructor at Rockland FTC. Gary Siegel, former FDNY Extrication Instructor also works here. Mark Wesseldine from Ladder 58 taught those fine Probies I mentioned above at Academy, he is also a Rockland instructor. There are quite a few instructors at the RCFTC who work in the city.

Thanks for asking captstanm1. I've been trying to keep up too.

We've had three of our volunteers get jobs at an area career department and they all tried to keep their vollie experience a secret while in rookie school and as probies. Apparently it draws a lot of extra (but good-natured) ribbing.

Maybe the same thing?

EFD, that's more or less the gist of it. This guy is obviously a vollie with SFD. There are guys on the job who volunteer on the outside, but it isn't something you advertise, especially as a Probie.

Nobody wants a probie who thinks he's been there/done that or 'knows it all.' They need to be respectful, quiet, and learn it our way, from us.

While it may not necessarily be such a bad thing to have volunteer experience prior to getting on the job, the idea of making it seem shameful or embarrassing to the new guys is a way of forcing them to be humble. By forcing them to be humble, we can mold them from scratch and accomplish the above objectives.

Then I REALLY feel for the lad who made it on national t.v. his first day on the job during the blackout. I seem to think it was Ladder 4...ABC

Some of you were making comments about testing for terminology, which wouldn't have struck me, except for something else I noticed in the past. On the 9/11 documentary, the probie is enroute to a fire run and asks one of the guys "do you want me to grab that long thing with the hook" and then showed him on the scene with a pike pole.

Is this something not learned at the academy, or just two coincidences...
