Trainer, I was reading in another forum that CR was playing in a golf league was this putt putt or real golf? Correct me if I am wrong but we used your ball how many times today CR uh 4 or 5 out of the 18 holes? Only kidding if we would not have tried to punch out of the woods we might have been ok!!!! It was a good day for golf too bad I had to return to work I might have been able to have a few Natural Lights.
Has anyone seen my golf ball it's white with little dimples and some writing on it?

I can see right now that serious attitudes are going to destroy the game of golf!
I was there to enjoy the great weather, move some dirt and a little sand, revel in the comraderie of old firefighter friends and to have some fun. Were it not for the constant scrutiny of the photographers and other teams that were obviously jealous of my game, it would have been a great day!
For those who witnessed my tee shot on Hole #11, I have nick named my driver "Fungo".
For those who care, I left the course littered in Pinnacle Titanium balls. Not the course, per se. The rough around the course. I can see right now that 5 dozen aren't enough when I golf 18.
The only highlight of my day of golf was when we saw the GIANT snapping turtle in the water hazard at #14. He had a head the size of a grapefruit; no exaggeration.
Any other smart-a$$es want to check in?

Real golfers walk.

MIKEY:
It took six hours to play as it was! 34 teams; best ball. They were backed up at every hole. Hit the ball and wait. I couldn't get into a rhythm. You KNOW how important that is to us good golfers. I can't begin to guess how long it would have taken if everyone walked.
You know; alot of courses won't let you walk on week-ends. Around here, you have to have a minimum of a foursome to even step foot on a course. Course marshals everywhere. 7-8 minutes a hole or they start ridin' your butt.
I try to walk the smaller courses, but with my advanced age and the severe degenerative disease along with the osteoarthritis in both knees, the gopher holes become extremely hazardous to me. I take a lot of ribbing for the elastic braces that I wear. Ah, people can be cruel sometimes.
But I'll keep hacking, replacing my divots and repairing ball marks on the greens (not mine; everyone else's).
Jack: my BEST day could not even come close to Tiger's WORST day.
I think I could give Nicklaus a run, though. He shoots in the 80s now.
Does anyone else have problems with goose poop on their greens?

I am just hasslin' you Chief. Not to be a wise guy, but have you ever noticed that the lil' old dirt plugs that come out of the ground when they aerate the course looks strikingly like goose guano? Hows my man Tyke doing? I find that I golf better when I walk. Hit and go to the ball. It keeps you focused on the task at hand. The only time we ride is at outings. It is a good way to sneak in some excersise when you walk. I once played with some REAL old guys..(like 80+ old) and we all walked. The funny thing was that we were stuck behind THREE younger guys...One of whom used to play for the Chicago Bulls. They were riding. It kills me when marginal golfers spend 5 minutes lining up the putt they are going to miss anyway. I probably dont play slow enough. The nice thing about the 24/48 schedule is that you can get out during the week. My buddy and I can play 18 in 2:40 if the course isnt backed up. Kinda keeps from blowing thewhole day. FORE!

Jay: Did you hear that? That was the sound of air rushing past your ball as you missed it completely with your driver!
The other sound that you hear is the pounding of your heart in anticipation of the butt kicking you are about to receive.
Tick....tick....tick....is it 10:30 am yet?

well here it is folks the First IACOJ (non-sanctioned)Midwestern Pro-am was held at the senic Indian Oaks Colf Course in metro Shabonna, Illinois.....attending this fine function were FF's from all over IL. and a special guest appearnace by the 5 hour driving, non-golfing, cart-riding, 3 state crossing Weruj1 who was able to enjoy the company and pleasure of DMSMITH, Jaybird210, Chief Reason, Trainer, Larry, Gary, and Mark.It was a fascinating day at the greens , which were barely able to contain some SMASHING drives and wonderfully entertaining comaraderie as the fairways were ATTACKED by the championship golfers. The short game is certainly a game of inches and it occassionally proved TOUGH for these fine fine athletes. After a loop-the-loop on the 9 hole course a small gathering was held to celebrate the tribute of all those who particpated in this glorious event. I can only imagine that next years event will be on a grander scale and that perhaps may be a sanctioned I.A.C.O.J. event...........thats all for now..........reported by Fairway "Putter" Greene
This reporter also failed to mention in the initial report that the golfers ADRESSED the ball with fervor, using a vocabulary only seen by old Navy sailors. F.G.

What a privilege it was to join some fellow crusties for a rousing round on the links. After Jay's gracious invitation, I joined him and his buddies for breakfast at the local diner. Then it was off to the course where we were joined by none other than Chief Reason, who is as sharp with his clubs and wit, as he is with his posts. And then Weruj1 himself decided to join the gathering, making a guest appearance from Ohio! All in all, a great time was had by all. Now if only Jay and I could learn how to play, maybe we could give CR a run for his money :D

Tomorrow, I am taking a golf lesson. ME!
Now; you saw me play. You're probably asking yourself "why would he be wasting money on lessons"?
Simple: my handicap in league play is 17. That's not good, Jay. The guy I played against Wednesday nite was a 4 handicap. I have to get good in a hurry.
I have the Don Moffitt Golf Outing coming up in about 3 weeks. I don't want to embarrass myself.
You know; you could get in on that one. For $2000, you sponsor 12 golfers and a hole, plus you get dinner afterwards. Cash bar though.

Actually, I might be up fer that. Shoot me a date, time, and place, please. Moffitt isn't my rep, but for what he's done for the fire service statewide, I'll kick in a few bucks (Burzynski's is $175/person; Wirsing's is $195. Neither is up for election this year. $135 is damn near affordable.)
Now, as for that lesson: if you'd have been watching me last week, you wouldn't be needing it. Did you forget everything on the trip home?

I'll be right there with you. Tom Watson has so much class. He, Tom Kite, Fuzzy; they just don't make 'em like that anymore. It's great to see Watson at the top....again.
However; there's a spoiler in the field this year. Nicknamed "Bagger VanLanduyt, he hits strong out of the rough, because he seldom hits drives that stay in the fairway. His short game is somewhere between the pin and Akron, Ohio. He has quite a following on the tour. And as long as he keeps changing his appearance, they won't be able to arrest him!

I went out this morning to Windmill Golf Course and played 18.
I felt just like the Priest in "Caddyshack".
It seemed like every drive that I hit went straight and every putt that I hit went in. I couldn't believe it.
I wound up shooting my best round EVER. I shot an 81!
I found out the last time I played that I was adjusting my grip after I started my set up. Now, I get my proper grip on the club and then set up to address the ball. It has made quite a difference.
There is a hole on this course that is a par 3; 100 yards. It's uphill and you have to hit over a big oak tree to get it on the green. If you hit short, there is a railroad tie retaining wall that you have to chip over, if you're lucky. Anyway, I hit my tee shot and the ball cleared the tree and I thought that I might be above the pin. When I got up to the green, my ball was a foot away from the cup! I was within a foot of a hole in one. Damn! I also scored two birdies in the same round for the first time. It was a good day.

It's really crazy. I can shoot a 77 one time and turn right around and shoot 100. If my drives are long and straight, then my second shot off the fairway sucks. I can drive a green in two, but then, I'll three putt!

I finally broke down and bought a titanium driver. I have come to the realization that the two most important clubs in your bag is your putter and your driver.
I didn't know the difference between steelhead and titanium until Wednesday of last week. I couldn't believe the difference. The steelhead was putting vibration clear up into my hands. My hands have been sore all season. I hit that titanium and the ball goes 260 - 290 yards. It is such a sweet sound.
Jay; just wanted you to know that I added another weapon to my growing arsenal. I am ready. Just name the date.

Well, we had our league's "end of the season" best ball tournament. We finished in second place by one stroke. I wound up the season leading our team in total points and brought my handicap down to a ten. I beat a guy last Sunday that I hadn't beaten since I took up the game. I counted up my cards; of course, I'm missing a few, but I had 53 at an average of $25 per and that's a lot of money. Add to that, the golf lessons at $150, new driver at $200, new putter at $100 and 4 dozen Pinnacles at $20 a dozen and that's even more money. But it was fun. I am definitely joining a course somewhere next year to save money. But at least and this is a direct quote from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"; "I'm getting better".:D
I may have some clubs for sale if anyone's looking.

In all of the excitement, I forgot to report that the team of trainer, Doog, Red Green and myself defeated the five other teams in our annual firefighter golf outing to bring the trophy home. We finised with a 62. Second place team which was supposedly "loaded", shot a 65. Trainer was crushing the ball with his new titanium driver. Doog was solid on the greens. Tim made a couple of key shots. I don't want to brag, but I did all right. I have a witness. However, I lost 2 balls.
For my efforts, I won a bag of clamps. I will keep them and re-gift them to Jay when he gets married.:p
Still playing. Played a tournament last week. Will be playing this week end. I will play until the snow flies and then I will switch to orange balls until the temperature falls to below 40!

Damnedest thing happened today. I lost two balls, but I found SIXTEEN!
Not a bad day for the most part. Played 18. Shot a 94. I hadn't played in two weeks. It showed on the greens. My putting sucked worse than it usually does.

I took part in our annual PD sponsored Special Olympics golf outing today. It was best ball format (which make players like me an automatic Tiger Woods :D ) at a course that I've been dying to play. After a really bad start and hitting everything to the left, Lo and Behold! I realized I was standing too close to the (expletive deleted) ball! It was a beautiful day for golf. Greens got faster as the day wore on.
The team that I played on shot to even par on a very tough course. 36 teams; best team won at 7 under. Not sure what trainer's team shot. Who could believe 'em anyway?
OK; here's the story on getting run over by my wife.
We were on the 2nd hole at the country club and I hit a tee shot that went wide and into the tall grass. I went up, jumped out of the cart to look for my ball on foot while my wife went back to her ball to hit. After she hit, I told her to come and help me look for my ball. She came over with the cart, I found my ball and she pulled up to me. I started to walk in front of the cart and she accidentally nudged me. I looked up and BOOM; she hit me hard enough with the cart to knock me to the ground. I did a tuck and roll and came up and threw my golf ball as hard as I could. It hit a tree and flew over to the next fairway. She asked me if I was OK; I said that I was, even though my left leg was numb from the knee down. I looked up and noticed that 2 guys in a John Deere golf cart were looking in our direction. I got into the cart and the next three holes was very quiet. Finally; I said "you know, I think those guys in the John Deere saw us. I will guarantee it will be in the clubhouse when we get there."
Sure enough; when we got to the clubhouse, some guy at the bar asked "are you the guy who got run over"? Damn!
Anyway; she claims that her foot "slipped", so being married 28 years; I am required by law to give her the benefit of the doubt.
Moral of the story is that she straightened out my slice and I tore up the back nine! We went out again on Sunday, played 18 because she felt sorry for hitting me on Saturday and both she and I shot our best rounds of the year!
Strange, huh?

No, Jenn; actually, I would call it a golf lesson!
Speaking of lessons; my son is coming home today to play a round of golf with me at the VV Country Club. Of course, I'm paying.
Over the past few years, he has consistently beaten me each time we played.
I am happy to report that I have turned the tables. He has not played as much and his skills have eroded. I, on the other hand, have managed to get in a couple rounds since the last time we played, so I expect to soundly defeat him today AND take his money. We will play a quarter a hole, dollar greenies and as always, bragging rights.
I will be driving the cart, so I don't think that there will be a cart "mishap" today.
The weather is beautiful today. It is a sunny, cool 65 degrees at the moment. Wind is about 7 mph. Should be perfect weather for getting the ball up in the air.

Well, I'm back from a very successful day at the golf course.
For those of you who understand the game, I picked up a cool $2. Took four holes outright at a quarter apiece and got a dollar greenie on number 11. I stuck my shot near the pin and he put TWO in the water.
I shot a 51 on the front nine, slowed down my approach to my tee shots, switched putters and on the back nine, carded a 37! ONE OVER PAR on the back nine. Total = 88. My son shot a 99. It was great. I think that he is happy my game has improved. Probably thinking about a father/son best ball at the company picnic or something!
Jay; don't get concerned. I will probably go out tomorrow and shoot to my handicap (21).
Anyone else going to join us next Friday? Larry will probably have to work if it doesn't rain.

I'll have to try to hit the driving range this week. I am having a problem with picking my body up and tucking my left arm on the follow-through; it's causing me to drub and top the ball. Not acceptable (then again, the alternative is to replace my clubs with various sized shovels.....)
I'm sure I can get Big Larry (Ole Uncle Lar) to play, but probably only for 9; he herniated another disk in his back, and 9 is about all he can take.

Yesterday had to be the worst conditions I have ever golfed in. Forty-five degrees, windy, even had rain a little now and then. I'd like to blame my crappy golfing on the weather, but it just ain't so. Did have a miraculous bogey on #4, though. Almost hit it out of bounds; had to take a drop for an unplayable lie. Drubbed the next shot. Now I'm laying four to the green, with about 170 yards to go. A miracle 5-wood shot rolled up four feet from the cup. Happy days.

Tell me if this has happened to you...
Last Friday, an organization I belong to had a scramble. I couldn't get a team together, so I just took advantage of the great day and just went around and watched everyone else. And I mean BEAUTIFUL DAY!!! Well, about half way through, one team had one member leave early and they asked me to fill in. I said sure. So I get to the next tee, line it up, and hit the most perfect shot next to one a person could imagine. Finished the hole and proceeded to the next. When what happens, TONES!!! Accident right next to the golf course. I run to see if there was anything to do, and figured I'd be right back. Think not. EMT's needed an extra hand to the hospital, and so went my best day of golf. Hmmph.
Oh well, that's what you get for taking your pager!!!

Went to the country club yesterday with my favorite retired battalion chief.
Teed off at 8:00 am. Temperature was 40. Wind was at about 10-15 mph. Overcast all morning and with the temps, the ball was not staying up in the air too long.
First swings on the new left knee were surprisingly comfortable. I had been having trouble with pain on the outside of the knee. A little sore today.
But, as usual, Tyke and I duked it out for course supremacy. We traded bogeys and double bogeys back and forth until I got him on my favorite part of the course; the back nine. Number 11, a water hole watched him drop 5 in the lake! I managed 2. It's a par 3, 128 yards, but the wind was slapping us in the face, so I clubbed up to a 7 iron, but kept hitting fat, so I put two in, plus two penalties and took a 7. Tyke got a 10. UUUUUgly!
Pleased to say that I hit the driver well, irons were coming up a little short, but bought a new putter mid season last year, worked with it over the winter and am making good putts. More confident, anyway.
Couple good pars, several bogeys. I took the first one from Tyke.
Next Sunday is a firefighter tourney at Lake Bracken. On a good team. Could actually place. Should be fun just the same.
Anybody wanting to throw down with me this year; trainer and I are always up for it. Anyone wanting to play my home course; the golf's on me.

Did I marry a good woman or what?
Wifey booked a golf package at Eagle Ridge for our 30th wedding anniversary.
We'll go up Sunday morning, check in, tee off on the General at 1:00 pm, play alot of golf, spend the night, check out Monday morning, go down town to Galena, she'll hit a couple of her favorite shops, I'll hit my favorite cigar store (Burns and Churchill's) and we'll come home. Our friends are going to keep Chopper for us.
It's going to be a great time.

Well, it was a great two days in Galena.
Yesterday, we got to go off on the General an hour early. I can only describe the course as up and down. Sheesh! Holes 11, 14 and 17 are unbelievable. On #14, I hit my ball to what I thought was in the middle of the fairway. Kim hit a very good shot too. Anyway, we went down and I mean way down to the fairway and looked for my ball. We finally found it; in the fairway, but it hit and dug in to where only a spot the size of a dime could be seen. I have never seen a ball buried like that except in sand. Can I get a ruling on that?
So, we played THE course. I shot an 88 and Kim shot a 107. Spent some money in the pro shop and then ate at Spikes in the clubhouse. All you can eat prime rib. Yummy.
Went into Galena today and got some hard to find cigars at Churchill and Burns. Had ice cream. Bought a leather riding vest at Union Leather. She bought some stuff. She got a teddy for the grand baby coming in November.
Chopper was glad to see us. So was Bucky.
Great 30th. I would recommend Galena to anyone for that special occasion.
When we got to Eagle Ridge Lodge, champagne was waiting for us in our room. And she only mentioned it to them in passing.
And you ain't golfed until you golf in the mountains of Galena!
An 88 and I TOOK my penalties when I lost my ball. Trick to the General is to stay in the short grass. I guess that's true anywhere!
Let's see; I got the General golf shirt, the General hat, the General clip on magnetic ball marker, the General divot tool and the General golf towel. Oh; and the General logo golf ball. I'm set.

My wife and I played in a Bombay golf tournament yesterday. I would have had more fun getting my teeth pulled, I think.
By the end of the round, she wasn't speaking to me and we were just barely married.
But I wasn't the one who shot 5 balls into the lake on #12. That's right; FIVE.
Has anyone else ever taken an 18 for a hole? She did.
Of course, things never started right anyway. I hit someone else's ball on the first hole. Rule says two stroke penalty, so I could never get back on track after that.
Oh well. We will have to make up before the Zinga golf outing. She's on my team.
It wouldn't have been so bad, but they were all CALLOWAY BIG BERTHAs.
15 bucks worth of balls. Oh wait; add the two she dropped in the water on #11.
Not a good day for golf balls.

We played in the Erie FD golf outing yesterday. Had two teams in it.
19 teams all together.
Nice little nine hole course.
Were it not for the 5th hole, we would have placed. Team 2 got third place.
Team 1, the team I played on, missed so many birdie opportunities that it wasn't even funny. We drove the ball well all day, but second shots were hurting us. Missed many 10 - 12 foot putts.
Oh well; it was a beautiful day and it was fun.
Now that we know the course layout, we will go back next year and win the damned thing.
Darin; thanks for the invites.

That 5th hole is the worst hole ever!!!! I have golfed that course since i was 15 and that hole has always been my least favorite. I am glad that you guys had fun. I wish i could have played but not this year.

The 5th wasn't bad, but the 6th, that hole sucked. Don't know if it was the wind or the frickin hole placement. Let me say if we would of at least pared the hole twice, we would have finished in 2nd place. All-in-all a great day, and, I'll be back.

Well, after having been crowned the champions for the last two years in the Oxford Open, Team Jordan took second place. Trainer will be along to tell you how well they did. Hint: they didn't win either.
Golf can be a brutal sport.

Well, I took my irons down to Doog's last night to re-grip. It was Friday Nite Club, so I figured "drink beer, eat pizza, listen to basketball and re-grip my clubs". I love multi tasking.
Anyway; after hitting myself in the num nums a couple of times, Doog offered to hold the club while I put the new grip on-Lamkin corded. Sweet.
I'm gunnin' for you this year, Ty. You know; I'm no slouch myself.;)

Because of my tremendous explosion off the tee, I only use a glove with my tee shots.
Noticed I don't go through too many since I started doing that.
What's the sense in getting good grips if you're going to keep the glove on anyway?
Well; the world needs ditch diggers too.

Wait a minute, I resemble that remark. I just wanted to say that although the grip was very good, I lost the feel of the club, kinda like grabbing sandpaper. Now along with my rough hands from diggin ditches, made for a short glove life. Wanna compare paychecks:p :)

Bought a nice pair of Etonics on sale.
My favorite golf ball has been on sale too.
Been buying boxes left and right.
That's because when I hit them, they go left and right.
No wait; that's trainer.
Hey, trainer; I hear Nike is coming out with a ball that floats!:D
I love talkin' trash.
Jay; you been out yet?

It my be left or right, mostly left, but still 20yds farther down the fairway, and playable:) I got sucked in by the nike/Tiger thing, but there is only one ball to play, Pro-V. I found a cure for the water, before you tee up, pull a shag from the bag and throw it in the water, Then I can feel good about putting that $3.50 pall on the tee;) Etonics, shopping at Wal Mart again.

In case you hadn't noticed, I have been quoting from "Caddyshack".
I could not afford the pay cut if I traded paychecks with you!
Maybe we'll bet paychecks at the Galesburg outing?

Now you know I gave up gambling, and you also know how I feel about that course, the only thing the woods are good for is shroomin. But I would bet you paychecks.......since I don't get one :p I hope you got a free bowl of soup with them shoes:) Who's on the teams?

Played in Erie today.
First place-Erie
Second place-Morrison
Third place-Atkinson
Fourth place-Osco
It was an exciting finish. Three way tie for first was decided by a three hole, sudden death playoff. Went down to a putt on the third hole.
We didn't get a trophy this year. We finished even.
Got a sweet t-shirt, coozie and key ring, though.
Great day for the event. Perfect weather. Driver was working. Irons and putter weren't. Such is the game.
Will be there next year.

Chief,
Sounds like it was a pretty good Tourny. I had to work, was unable to get the day off, even working OT today so make it 3 days on shift! I had a couple different teams call wanting me to play but not able to. I hate it when a "Job" gets in the way of a day of golf!
I got to get out a couple times before the baby arrives!!!!

Chief,
played golf on Friday, played at Pebble Creek Golf Club in LeClaire, IA. First time playing here, just a 9 hole course, only 1 yr old, BUT.... Hardest dang course I have ever played!!! It is a really really nice course! They are planning on starting to build the back 9 in the spring. I lost more golf balls there than I have in years!! It is a tough course, however I do recommend playing it! It is kind of neat, you never know what you are getting into each shot you make!!!
On a 1-10 scale ( 10 best and 1 worst) I would rate the course a 8-8.5
A couple more years to mature and a back 9 will make it one of the best courses in the Quad Cities for sure and possibly in the state! Just my opinion!
Maybe we can set a time to play before the baby arrives this month!

I still can't get over how much your life has changed in such a short period of time, Darin! A new wife, new baby!!! :D :) Can't believe it's been almost a year since you got married. WOW time flies!
Can hardly wait to see the new baby pics!! :)

Let's see. Babies born in October. My chief was born on the 19th, my sister on the 25th, me on the 27th and my grandson, Jax on the 30th.
Since I will be busy on the 27th celebrating my 55th, I am taking off the 26th to play some golf...somewhere. I haven't played at Jay's this year. Spirit Hollow is calling again. Too many to choose from.
But Pebble Creek sounds good, too.
Last time I played Valley View, I shot an 85. My end-of-the-season handicap is 17. Started out in the spring with a 21. Goal this year was to get into the teens. Mission accomplished. I credit a gap wedge and a different putter.

Thanks,
I am on shift today, leave tomorrow for training in Wisconsin and return on Thursday evening. I hope the little guy holds off until I get home! He could arrive at any time! He is not due until Nov. 5th but pretty sure he is coming a little early! I will be sure to keep everyone posted and will post a pic as soon as I have one. Stay safe everyone!

What the heck is an ultrasound picture doing in a golf thread, anyway?
